When the book opens she's already committed suicide, and it's about how he deals with it"), explains his aversion to short stories ("Anything that doesn't take years of your life and drive you to suicide hardly seems worth doing"), and crushes his 11-year-old son's dreams of becoming an artist ("John draws all the time, but I have to say he's not very good").
