This week’s issue of New York features a time line that details the steps that Nicolas Coppola took in order to turn himself into Nic Cage — a time line as comprehensive as it is entertaining. Sadly, the majority of headlines that Cage has been generating these days have not been for his punching prowess while wearing a bear suit or his intense hatred of bees, but rather his recent stretch of bad financial luck. While Cage has been out in front of this story and working overtime to point the finger of blame at his shady financial manager, it seems as if at least some of the blame is going to end up cascading its way back on the less-than-frugal Cage. But after reading through this list of his extravagant purchases, we can’t help but to love Cage even more. After all, if your friendly Vulture editors had millions of dollars at our disposal, we’d probably spend the loot on many of the same things Cage did.
Among Cage’s purchases were several yachts, a jet, a castle, over 50 cars, over $1 million dollars worth of comic books including Action Comics Number One which featured the very first appearance of Superman, several mansions including one in New Orleans (that may or may not be haunted), two Bahamanian islands, real shrunken heads, and a $500,000 Lamborghini once owned by the Shah of Iran.
He also has dropped $276,000 on a dinosaur skull (reportedly out-bidding Johnny Depp), 2 non-malt liquor real King Cobras (Moby and Sheba) and a pet octopus.
Regarding those King Cobras, though they may sound like a luxurious purchase to plebes like you and I, it’s important to note that Cage is, above all else, a responsible consumer. After all, according to the L.A. Times, he also purchased antidote serum to protect himself and whoever came in contact with Moby and Sheba should they be accidentally bitten. Now, onto more pressing matters: Anyone have room in their aquarium for an extra pet octopus? Serious offers only, please.
