Planning a trip to the cinema this weekend? It’s the end of August and Hollywood assumes everyone in America is on vacation, so unless you live in New York or L.A., you have just two new choices: the Matt Dillon–starring, bank-robbing actioner Takers or the critically tolerated Eli Roth–produced demon-possession thriller The Last Exorcism, neither of which seem worth a case of bedbugs (you could also see the rereleased Avatar, but you already have). So, we wondered — is this truly the worst movie weekend of 2010? We crunched some numbers this morning, and the answer may surprise you.
Cancel the Oscars! Shockingly, this is not the worst movie weekend of the year — it’s actually an exceptionally good movie weekend! Vulture added and averaged the Rotten Tomatoes scores for every wide-released film for every weekend in 2010 so far and, incredibly, found twenty other weekends that were even more awful. So enjoy Takers and Last Exorcism — they may not be great, but they’re certainly no worse than Sex and the City 2 and Prince of Persia. Our complete findings, below.
