Jodi Picoult: ‘The Times Favors White Male Authors’

Jodi P.

Jodi Picoult, best-selling author of books like The Pact and My Sister’s Keeper, has come out swinging after the Times’ Michiko Kakutani’s rave review of Jonathan Franzen’s new novel, Freedom. First, of the review, Picoult tweeted, “Is anyone shocked?” Then the claws, pretty awesomely, came out, when NYTPicker interviewed her, and she said:

“It is my personal opinion that yes, the Times favors white male authors. That isn’t to say someone else might get a good review — only that if you are white and male and living in Brooklyn you have better odds.”

Later, she tweeted: “NYT loves its literary darlings, who tend to be dudes w/MFAs … In summation: NYT sexist, unfair, loves Gary Shteyngart, hates chick lit, ignores romance.” And, yesterday, she added, via Twitter: “No sour grapes. I don’t care if the NYT does or doesn’t review me — but I’d love to see some new, unnoticed writers be lauded.”
