Kanye West Spills Ink On… Yep, Taylor Swift

It’s starting to seem like in the year 2019, the pop culture world will still be obsessing over Kanye interrupting Taylor. West has decided to address the incident yet again in a first-person narrative in the October issue of XXL (again, conveniently timed as he prepares to release new music).

“I stress that the incident wasn’t about Taylor personally,” he writes. “And it definitely wasn’t about race. Where I messed up is, at the end of the day, it’s your show, Taylor. It’s your show, MTV.”

He goes on to discuss how the fallout forced him to get all introspective:

“In a way, I had thrown a Molotov cocktail at my own career, and it gave me an opportunity, for the first time, to go away and find out who I was… Because I felt very alone.”

Clearly he’s pleased with that “Molotov cocktail” line! Fortunately, West spiced things up somewhat with an intriguing comparison later in the essay.

“The relationship with the public and with your fans is like the relationship with your girlfriend,” he wrote. “How could I not, at a certain point, be like, ‘I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have been at the awards show. I’m sorry’? Not that I don’t deserve to get beat up or change who I am inside, to make sure that that doesn’t happen again…. I knew I wasn’t in a great spot publicly after the incident, but I would just block it out and work as hard as possible and let my work be my saving grace.”

In addition to writing the piece for XXL and gracing the cover, West also curates a special 40-page section of the issue in the role of “creative director.” We would like to think this will be the final word on the Swift-West matter, but considering both of them are just beginning major press assaults in anticipation of upcoming fall albums, that, sadly, seems very unlikely.
