Is the Romantic Comedy Dead?

James L. Brooks’s How Do You Know opens today to largely unamused reviews, rounding out what may have been the worst rom-com year … well, ever. Katherine Heigl had two misfires that grossed a fraction of her previous hauls, and while Morning Glory had its moments (all of them involving Rachel McAdams), that didn’t seem to matter at the box office. So what’s going on? Are romantic comedies not as good as they used to be, or has the rom-com audience grown up, gotten married, and moved on?
