We knew she was up for it, but now it’s official: Anne Hathaway has been cast in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. She’ll be playing Selina Kyle, otherwise known as — dunh, dunh, dunh — Catwoman! Wishing her better luck than Halle! (The press release doesn’t make explicit mention of Catwoman. It’s possible Nolan will do something similar to what he did in The Dark Knight with Harvey Dent/Two Face and give us Catwoman’s backstory.) Nolan has also announced, after much speculation, that the villain Tom Hardy has been cast to play is Bane. Bane had a minor part in Joel Schumacher’s last Batman movie, Batman & Robin, and is the baddie who broke Batman’s back in the comic books. (Something he was able to do because Bane looks like this. Hardy’s gonna be hitting the gym.) If anyone is curious as to how Nolan could go darker and more disturbing with this new film than he did with The Dark Knight, well, a paralyzed Batman and Anne Hathaway in gritty pleather make for a convincing answer.
