Monica Ali, the literary novelist best know for 2003’s Brick Lane, is writing a book that imagines what would have happened if Princess Diana had lived. According to Ali, Untold Story, which will be published in April, will ask “the question, had she lived, would she have found peace and happiness in her own life, or would the curse of fame have always been too great?” It sounds like Curtis Sittenfeld’s recent American Wife, a novel imagining the life of a thinly veiled Laura Bush, insofar as both can claim highbrow authors, famous subjects, and mass appeal, and will be out just in time to capitalize on Will and Kate’s wedding mania.
