the never ending story

The Zero Dollar Spider-Man Musical Will Open the Day Before the $65 Million One

Justin Moran, an improv comedian and award-winning composer, has written The Spidey Project: With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility on a zero dollar budget. He found a cast and composer, and he’ll open his show on March 14 at the Peoples Improv Theater. “Our goal is to do what [Julie Taymor] should have done, and that’s make a good musical,” Moran said. Though he dubiously claims his goal “isn’t to tear down Taymor or parody her production,” it sure sounds like it. Spidey Project will follow the origin story laid out for Spider-Man in the original comics; Turn off the Dark will not. Spidey Project was built on a shoestring budget; obviously Turn off the Dark wasn’t. Etc. But the major difference is that Moran doesn’t expect to get more than one performance off the ground without a cease-and-desist letter, and he probably won’t make tons of money regardless of any and all reviews. Oh well! At least he’ll have made a statement. [ArtsBeat/NYT]
