“Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall,” Coldplay’s latest single, didn’t have to wait as long as “Viva La Vida” to face charges of plagiarism: Already, the Internet has accused Chris Martin of ripping off “Ritmo de la Noche,” a 1990 dance track by Mystic. Ridiculous, right? Well, actually, no. Turns out “Ritmo de la Noche” — which is based on Peter Allen and Adrienne Anderson’s 1976 song “I Go to Rio” — was ripped off for “Teardrop” … only, you know, legally. The band released this statement: “Allen and Anderson are credited as writers on ‘Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall.’ Chris was inspired to write the song after watching the film Biutiful by Alejandro González Iñárritu. In the film, there is a nightclub scene in which a track [’Ritmo de la Noche’] is playing in the background, based on ‘I Go to Rio.’” So, in conclusion, it’s all Javier Bardem’s fault. [Guardian UK]
