When Vulture learned a few weeks ago that Eva Mendes had joined the cast of Derek Cianfrance’s family rivalry drama, The Place Beyond the Pines, we immediately dubbed her and her co-star Ryan Gosling “Team Smolder,” since they’d be facing off against the comparatively dimpled Bradley Cooper and Greta Gerwig on “Team Cute.” Last night, at an event celebrating Angel by Thierry Mugler, Mendes confessed to us that she wants to switch teams. “I actually prefer to be Team Cute. Can I switch? Cute is way better,” she said. “I’d rather be on Team Cute, because I think it’s harder to be cute than sexy.” We were surprised, since Mendes’s sex appeal — evident to anyone with eyes — had landed her the gig repping Angel. “You know what it’s like? Every time someone pays you that compliment of being cute or adorable, that feels like a real compliment, because being hot is all smoke and mirrors at some point,” she said. “I think it takes more personality to be cute, so that’s a deeper compliment.”
