Reese Witherspoon will produce and star in DreamWorks’ Who Invited Her?, “about a woman who insists on tagging along on a guy’s bachelor party weekend.” This sounds like a project being developed by folks who always try to come up with the most sensible, serious words when they play mad-libs! (A comedy about women that contains a [fill in the blank noun] wedding? A broad comedy that hopes to be the next [fill in the blank movie title] Hangover?) Wedding comedies were popular enough pre-Bridesmaids, but after its box-office success, we’ll likely never be done with them. (When the plot of Soul Man is retrofitted for a wedding, and not high school, maybe the end will be in sight.) On the bright side, if there’s a coming deluge of Bridesmaids by way of The Hangover knockoffs, maybe we’ll become more accustomed to the idea that comedies for women (with weddings) and comedies for men (with farts) can actually be comedies for both sexes — you know, movies with weddings and farts!
