Stephen Colbert, With a Little Help From Jack White, Sings to ‘Charlene’

In 2006, Stephen Colbert unveiled “Charlene (I’m Right Behind You),” a little bit of antiquated stalker-jam magic from his vastly underappreciated New Wave band, Stephen and the Colberts. Now here comes the sequel: “Charlene II (I’m Over You),” a blues-rock number in which Stephen disavows all past feelings for the titular object of his affection (although, if she does happen to be into him, his e-mail is still Stephen@CharleneForever.com), was premiered on The Colbert Report last night. And this time, the stakes are even higher: Jack White intro’d the song, and the Black Belles, a band signed to White’s Third Man Records, backed Colbert up on it; also, the track will be officially released to iTunes via Third Man, and Colbert and White will be roaming around Manhattan today selling vinyl copies from a truck. By the way, the White Stripes broke up in February, and Jack White’s been spending his time since having divorce parties and palling around with funny people. The man knows how to live.
