Sesame Street Rep: Bert and Ernie ‘Do Not Have a Sexual Orientation’

Though it’s unclear yet whether puppet marriage is legal in New York, that didn’t stop the many signees of a new Internet petition called “Let Bert & Ernie Get Married On Sesame Street,” which argued that the time had come for the two Sesame Street roommates to make things official. It was, perhaps, the most passionately silly extrapolation one could make from the two Muppets’ decades of ambiguous cohabitation, and yet the Sesame Workshop felt the need to respond to it anyway. “Bert and Ernie are best friends,” a rep wrote on the Workshop’s Facebook page today. “They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves. Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation.” Kermit had better print that out and show it to Miss Piggy.
