Community’s guest-star roster for next season is expanding even further and now includes Pierce’s father. Deadwood alum Larry Cedar will be playing Chevy Chase’s father this coming season, using “the Estelle Getty approach,” as showrunner and creator Dan Harmon put it, since Cedar is actually 12 years younger than Chase. Papa Pierce, erroneously believed to be deceased, reappears in his estranged son’s life after Pierce makes an ill-advised business decision for his moist towelettes empire. Even Swearengen devotees might not recognize Cedar from his time in the Wild West, but the nerdy and PBS-obsessed among us surely recognize him from such tunes as “Tessellations,” “Angle Dance,” and “Count On It” from the proto-geek classic Square One.
