Looking for a new cultural anniversary to help you lament the passing of time and your misspent youth? Good news! The Royal Tenenbaums is already ten years old. To celebrate, the New York Film Festival hosted a screening and Q&A with Wes Anderson, Angelica Huston, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Bill Murray, and since the event involved Murray, a microphone, and an audience, it was very funny. What we learned: Bill Murray is Team GOOP (“I loved working with Gwyneth. She believes what I believe”), and so, apparently, was Luke Wilson, at least on set. (Murray: “I thought Luke was good? He’s not good. Because at the time, he was in love with this girl over here” [points to Paltrow] “and he couldn’t think straight.”) Paltrow, for her part, told a story about bowling with Paul McCartney in an attempt to secure song rights for the movie, and everyone went on about how terrified they were of Gene Hackman. Except for Murray, of course: “I’d hear these stories, like, ‘Gene threatened to kill me today.’ ‘He can’t kill you, you’re in a union.’ ‘Gene threatened to take all of us and set fire to us.’ ‘It’s a union shoot, it’s New York, he can’t set fire to you.’” It’s true, look it up.
