Maurice Sendak Sings, Huffs Markers, Is Totally Delightful on Colbert

Children’s book author and noted grump Maurice Sendak agreed to be on The Colbert Report Tuesday night, and because he was so great (“I hate those e-books. They cannot be the future. They may well be. I will be dead. I won’t give a shit”) they brought him back again last night. It was, as mentioned above, excellent television. Maurice Sendak, who seldom has a kind thing to say about anyone famous, plainly loves Stephen Colbert. Even better, he expresses this love through jabs like, “You’ve started already by being an idiot,” and “Stephen Colbert, supremely ordinary.” And then, after some children’s book reviewing and blurbing (“‘The sad thing is I like it.’ That’s a good blurb”), Colbert teaches Sendak about sniffing Sharpies, and Maurice Sendak starts singing. Maniacally. Please, just watch already.
