Tony Predictions: Song-and-Dance Division

ham

The four contenders.Photo: iStockphoto

Just a few days to go until the Tony-award nominations are announced Tuesday! It's been a great but thin year for musical revivals, and kind of a weird year for new musicals. We know Glory Days won't get nominated for anything, but what about all the other shows? Now that Michael Riedel has weighed in with his predictions — whaddya know, nothing for The Country Girl! — we're happy to present our predictions for the Tony nominations in the musical categories.

We're voting for the ham. »

The Tonys Pass ‘Glory Days’ By

glory days

Photo: Scott Suchman

…In the wink of a young girl's eye, to reuse a joke. It took only one day for Broadway's Glory Days to close, and it took just another day for the Tony Awards Administration Committee to rule that the ill-fated musical is ineligible for Tonys in all categories. That answers our question, we guess. It's a sad end for the musical, which transferred from Washington's Signature Theater Company with high hopes that its stripped-down, loose aesthetic might help it fit in in a Broadway season featuring a number of similarly offbeat musicals. Instead, the producers lost their shirts, Signature and especially director Eric Schaeffer suffered a significant black eye, and the two 23-year-olds in question — librettist James Gardiner (now 24) and songwriter Nick Blaemire — must feel pretty crappy, despite the fact that most reviews tried to be as gentle with the pair as possible.

In the end, moving this show to Broadway was a terrible idea. We're not trying to pile on but instead to offer some helpful advice when we say that when we saw the tagline on the show's poster — "What if two 23-year-olds wrote a musical about four 19-year-olds?" — our simple reply was, "Then it would be a great Off–Off Broadway show."

Can ‘Glory Days’ Still Find Glory at the Tonys?

Photo: Scott Suchman

The announcement that the musical Glory Days would close after only one official performance isn't just a blow to the musical's creative team, including its wet-behind-the-ears creators (24-year-old librettist James Gardiner and 23-year-old songwriter Nick Blaemire). It also might mean the show's Tony chances — not just for the thin Best Musical race, where some thought the show might have a shot, but for technical categories as well — are nil. Does it have a chance?

Certainly it is tough for a show that gets panned by the Times to get nominated, though it's not at all unheard of. Glory Days wasn't Moose Murders; its reviews were gentle pans, not scathing, vicious diatribes. Certainly closing early doesn't send a good message to Tony voters, but shows that didn't do well commercially have been nominated before. But the buzz in Broadway chat rooms is that Glory Days may be out of luck for a simple reason — closing after a single performance means that most members of the Tony nominating committee may not have even had a chance to see the show. In fact, one All That Chat commenter claims that the show isn't even eligible:

MTV Movie Awards: Will McLovin Finally Get His Due?

Photo-llustration: Columbia Pictures (McLovin), Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Oscar)

Not that it could ever repair the damage done by his inexplicable defeat at February's Academy Awards, but Christopher "McLovin" Mintz-Plasse's incendiary performance as himself in last summer's Superbad has earned him a nomination for an MTV Movie Award in the Breakthrough Performance category. If there is truly any justice in this world, he'll win this one and Javier Bardem, overcome with guilt, will man up and mail him the trophy he really deserves.

‘Young Frankenstein’ — Yes, ‘Young Frankenstein’ — Leads Outer Critics Circle Noms

Young Frankenstein.Photo: Amy Arbus

After a year in which the Outer Critics Circle mostly got things right, the organization has reverted to its usual laughability this year, announcing a bizarre bunch of nominees for their Broadway and Off Broadway awards that mix admirable nods for smaller shows with inexplicable awards for lousy shows. For example, Young Frankenstein, which despite mediocre reviews and lukewarm audience response led the nominations with ten, including Outstanding New Broadway Musical. Needless to say, the commenters at All That Chat were instantly on the case, praising the awards a little (especially for recognizing the well-liked Next to Normal) and complaining about them a lot. "Les Liaisons? NINE? It's not best anything! Who are these people?!?!?" wrote commenter skrigs about Les Liaisons Dangereuses' haul, the best of any play. "Outer Critics? Outer WHAT? Outer SPACE?" asked JHguy67, adding, "God this joke is getting old!" And macbroadway wryly noted, "Interesting list. Why isn't Pia Zadora nominated?"

The Tony Awards: Exactly Like the NBA's Western Conference

Photo illustration: Everett Bogue; Photos: Getty Images

As the Tonys approach, it's becoming clear that this is one of the most competitive awards seasons in years for plays. After years of musicals being the big dogs on Broadway, 2007–2008 saw the premieres of more than fifteen new plays and revivals, meaning that the battle for coveted Tony nominations will be fierce — in the Best Play and Best Revival categories, but also in the starry acting categories, where everyone competes against everyone else. Best Actor alone could see Kevin Kline, Brian Cox, Patrick Stewart, and Ian McShane battling it out.

To any theater fan, the logjam in the Tony play categories brings to mind nothing other than, of course, the current standings of the NBA's Western Conference, where the top nine teams have spent the season jostling for position, and even now, only three and a half games separate first place from sixth. But which NBA team corresponds with which dramatic masterpiece? Vulture sorts it out, after the jump.

Bob Dylan Wins a Pulitzer Prize

Photo: Getty Images

What, the guy isn't esteemed enough already? Bob Dylan just won a "special citation" from the Pulitzer board, for "his profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power." In other culture categories, prizes were won by Junot Díaz's outstanding The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao for Fiction; Mark Feeney, art critic at the Boston Globe for Criticism; and — supporting Charles Isherwood's rave-of-all-raves — Tracy Letts's August: Osage County for Drama.

Could ‘South Pacific’ Dance Away With the Tonys?

Photo illustration: Joan Marcus; Courtesy of The American Theater Wing

It just might be hat-eating season on Broadway: First, Ben Brantley ate his in his unequivocal rave of the Patti LuPone revival of Gypsy after his dismissive review of that production's earlier City Center run. Now, Vulture may end up devouring a (sailor?) hat too: Last week, given the raves from Brantley et al for Gypsy, we declared that show pretty much unstoppable come Tony time. In the Best Revival category, the then-still-previewing revival of South Pacific, we said, was toast. Too lightweight, too sincere, too un-LuPone-y. Well, oopsies. Today's Brantley review of South Pacific is ecstatic beyond all our expectations and may change everything. Could South Pacific's chipper nurses, sailors, and Polynesian babes overwhelm the vaudeville and psychotherapy of Gypsy, as some have already suggested?

Will Everything Come Up Tony for ‘Gypsy’?

Photo illustration: Sara Krulwich /The New York Times/Redux; Courtesy of The American Theater Wing

Gypsy's opening announces the beginning of Tony season on Broadway, as the next few months promise more eleventh-hour entries, with shows positioning themselves for runs at the award. The rave reviews for the revival — and for its three stars: Patti LuPone, Laura Benanti, and Boyd Gaines — raise the question: Can anyone beat Gypsy?

The question is made more complicated by the fact that this year, bizarrely, has been ruled by the straight play on Broadway. By our count, only twelve musicals will be eligible for Tony Awards this year, and only four of those are revivals. So that means the competition for acting awards, as well as the big prize, is much thinner than in most years. (Meanwhile, the Tonys for straight plays are going to be brutal this year.) So can Gypsy get the sweep — Revival, Actress, and Featured Actor and Actress? We think it probably can.

Helen Mirren Finally Wins Award for Lifelong Devotion to Nudity

Mirren in Calendar Girls.Courtesy of Touchstone Pictures

Forget the Oscar, forget the BAFTA, forget the Oliviers and the SAG Awards and the Emmys. The USA Naturist Society has given a richly deserved award to Dame Helen Mirren, naming the oft-unclothed star of The Queen and Calendar Girls No. 1 on their list of celebrity heroes of nudity. (Kyra Sedgwick, Matthew Fox, and noted bongo player Matthew McConaughey also appear on their top-ten list.) Considering the sexy sexagenarian's long-standing commitment to the cause of getting her kit off on film, we can think of no award the actress would clutch closer to her unhindered breast.
