After trying to catch a glimpse of the soon-to-open open boutique Pas de Deux this weekend (no dice), we escaped into the new Country Store by Engineered Garments at Den, a pop-up that opened Saturday. Unlike the sterile, white-on-white décor of the former Common Projects display, EG has decked out the 350-square-foot space in a woodsy Field & Stream motif. Framed pages from dated hunting magazines line the walls, rickety beams are propped overhead, and scattered patchwork pillows and knit blankets add a country vibe. Designed by Daiki Suzuki, the fall/winter collection is inspired by early 1900s workwear and is heavy on wool, Buffalo check, and rugged plaids. Men emerging from the dressing room resembled stylish lumberjacks — a look we didn't find so unappealing in moderation. Highlights include fur-lined vests, selvaged-denim jeans, skinny plaid ties, wool vests, and dark, dapper blazers. Accessories from outside brands complement the wares, like canvas bags from J.W. Hulme and Duluth Pack, and work boots from Whites and Dayton. Check back later this summer for a brand-new women’s collection, FWK by Engineered Garments (named after Katherine Hepburn’s mansion in Fenwick), which will present downsized, tailored versions of the outdoorsy looks.
