The Fug Girls Know Why Mary-Kate Olsen Is Smiling

What's gotten into her?

What's gotten into her?Photo: Getty Images

We're accustomed to seeing the Olsens skulking around town with their arms over their wee faces and a battalion of bodyguards preventing any errant air from being breathed in their direction. So it was a shock Saturday night at Rock & Republic to see one of the twins actually allowing herself to spend a full fifteen minutes in view of the masses — and looking happy, to boot. The Olsen in question laughed and smiled at the people around her, boasted shockingly bouncy hair, and did not appear to have arisen recently from the depths of a Starbucks Dumpster. "That has to be Ashley," the girls behind us decided. "She looks so clean." Well, hang on to your shower gel, ladies, because the well-groomed and jolly Olsen in attendance was in fact Mary-Kate. And if her mood is any indication, girlfriend has been getting laid. Or at least that's our pet theory.

Fug Girls: Tropical Storm Hanna Has No Respect for Fashion

One of the people.

One of the people.

One thing we love about Ugly Betty's Becki Newton is that she's game for anything when it comes to Fashion Week. Saturday's Vena Cava show was not the first time we've seen her at a presentation, which typically put models on a dais while guests mill around with cocktails — meaning celebrities have to be prepared to stand and mingle with the masses. Yet Newton appeared completely comfortable, cheerfully congratulating the designers and giving a long on-camera interview before polishing off her Champagne and dashing out into the rain.

Unfortunately, Newton was one of the only famous faces undeterred by the weather. The only others we saw were socialites Ferebee Bishop and Byrdie Bell — the latter still blonde — and Leigh Lezark, who ogled the pretty, pretty dresses without ever removing her thick-framed white sunglasses. You know the ones: Chloë Sevigny discarded them about three years ago.

By the time the hour-long event ended, the rain pounded down in an all-out deluge. Give them credit for trying: Via Spiga, which collaborated with Vena Cava on the shoes worn in Saturday's presentation, apparently provided a bunch of supersize souvenir umbrellas for the soggy patrons who came to Chelsea. There may not have been enough to go around — which in turn may have caused attendees to gank the umbrellas of innocent, unknowing bloggers still working the room — but the idea certainly won them some points. Too bad Tropical Storm Hanna has no respect for fashion. Or for our shoes.

Fug Girls: Anna Wintour, Jessica Szohr Shelter From Storm at Alexander Wang

As Tropical Storm Hanna's sloppy seconds roared through New York on Saturday afternoon, bedraggled guests poured into Alexander Wang's show and were greeted with two welcome sights: small bottles of white wine and Anna Wintour's shiny, bone-dry bob. Naturally, the Vogue editrix bore no effects of the inclement weather. Either she has the world's best umbrella-wrangler, or even the rain is afraid to bump into her. She also survived wearing a tight ribbed sweater on a humid day with nary a perspiration stain. We wish our sweat glands were so obedient. Maybe she secretly had hers removed in an exotic operation in Guam. You heard it here first.

Fug Girls Shamed by Instant Recognition of Alex McCord at Rosa Cha

This man's heat will blind you.

This man's heat will blind you.

It felt strange to be watching Rosa Cha’s line of summery bikinis and cover-ups while it absolutely poured rain outside. We imagine this must be what it’s like to be on a strict no-fat diet while attending the Bacon Festival.

Braving the elements was professional lover of girls in bikinis Nigel Barker, thoughtfully seated right next to the lovely Zoe “Center Stage” Saldana, who had to be led to her seat from backstage as though she’d just been struck blind. Hopefully, the power of Nigel’s hotness restored her ability to walk twenty feet on her own.

Walking and talking independently was Lost’s Evangeline Lilly, who was unfortunately wearing the ugliest pants we’ve seen all week. Maybe she’s at Fashion Week to find some new ones? We stared at her for twenty minutes before we realized who she was — probably because we’re used to seeing her scrabbling through the underbrush with Sawyer — but we easily I.D.'d Misses USA (Teen and Original Flavor) thanks to their handy sashes, which we really feel ought to be required for all bold-faced names. We assume they were scouting for future swimsuit competitions, but we have no idea what The Real Housewives of New York’s Alex McCord and Simon van Kempen were doing at the show, other than posing for an endless series of photos. Alex and Simon must be doing something right, though. After all, to our deep, deep shame, we identified them immediately.

BREAKING: Aldo ‘Seen on the Runway!’

Those shoes. On the runway. It must be true. It must.

Those shoes. On the runway. It must be true. It must.Photo: Jessica Coen

If you weren't sweating it out at the tents, it happened to be a fantastic day to go shopping (pre-deluge, anyhow), as the Saturday crowds were about two-thirds what they would normally be. Makes sense: Most shopaholics are clamoring around the runways and all. But what if the runways were to come to, ahem, Aldo? Today we saw the sign pictured above, positioned conveniently near the entrance of the store on Broadway in Soho. It reads: "AS SEEN ON THE RUNWAY AT NEW YORK FASHION WEEK." Aldo. Really? And which runway would that be? But surely a retailer would never lie to us for the sake of marketing! Perhaps there are similar signs at Express, too?

Fug Girls: Lohan Brings Out the Paparazzo in All of Us

Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson try to escape. But not too hard.

One valuable tip we’ve learned over the course of a couple of fashion weeks is, if you miss a celeb going into a show, you can always catch them sneaking out the back exit, sandwiched between a couple of models and a bunch of dudes pushing racks of clothes to nearby vans. Which is how, Saturday morning, we found ourselves following a huge crush of paparazzi who were racing across Bryant Park in pursuit of that most precious prey, Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson.

Abaete’s ‘Underpinnings’ Are Sweet, Not Slutty

When we read in Abaete's program notes that the collection was inspired by "elements of underpinnings: boning, exposed casing, lingerie, girdles and netting," we thought we were in for a slut parade. We couldn't have been more wrong. What followed was a lovely collection of flirty cocktail dresses with mini and full skirts in shades of soft red, bright yellow, and blue. But we were puzzled by the "underpinning shorts" with see-through panels on the side — they resembled transparent biker shorts. How can one walk down the street with the sides of their thighs and hips exposed to the world? But the nude corsets with white boning were hardly stereotypical, and actually looked rather sweet topping a full skirt.

Fug Girls: Not Even Lacoste Can Cheer Andy Roddick

Brooklyn Decker and her betrothed, Andy Roddick, at Lacoste.

Brooklyn Decker and her betrothed, Andy Roddick, at Lacoste.

When we got to Bryant Park this morning, we were greeted by a cheerful horde of Rock the Vote employees, registering fashionistas — and one adorable little old lady — to vote. We suspect if Andy Roddick had been allowed to cast a ballot on whether to actually show up at Lacoste, he would have punched the "no" chad with enthusiasm.

Backstage Beauty: Sharp, Dark Eyes at Yigal Azrouël

Backstage at Yigal Azrouël, beauty editor Aja Mangum caught makeup artist Jeanine Lobell applying a lot of eye makeup. The "tougher" look offsets the flowy clothes in this year's collection. Tired of all the dark eyes? They're not going anywhere, says Lobell. Watch the video and practice at home.

Transparent Pants, Motives at Fetherston

At last night's Erin Fetherston show, what really got us excited were the wide-legged, see-through pants. Just think: In eight or nine months, comfy, translucent pants will be socially acceptable! (Or at least amongst Fetherston fans.) But our excitement was nothing compared to that of the well-heeled ladies creating a clusterfuck around Nigel Barker (who appeared to have attended all by his lonesome). One pretty young thing must have been begging for a shot on ANTM because we overheard him tell her, "We'd love to have you! You're beautiful." It was … heartwarming. Yes, that's what it was.

LiLo and Sam Ro Appear at Charlotte Ronson

Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson are wide-eyed at Charlotte Ronson.

Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson are wide-eyed at Charlotte Ronson.

Charlotte Ronson's show was packed for a Saturday morning, and the young, preppy hipsters thronged in the standing-room section were craning their necks for a look at LiLo and Sam Ro. When Lohan plopped down in the front row, she was so swarmed by photogs she had to return to her backstage haven before reemerging moments before the show started. Ronson's collection consisted of relaxed-fitting minidresses and ruffly floral chiffon numbers. She also showed high-waisted tapered pants made baggy at the hips by ample pleating that only a model-size person could wear. Also in the front row: Jessica Szhor and Jessica Stam.

Sasha Pivovarova Is Friday’s Top Model

From left: Irina Kulikova, Colette Pecheckhonova, Sasha Pivovarova

Notable model news on the first day of Fashion Week: BCBG used runway staples, with Irina Kulikova opening and Abbey Lee closing, and an unfortunate stumble by Arlenis Sosa two minutes in. Colette Pecheckhonova, a late-nineties "It" girl who walked in Paris and Milan last season, reemerged in New York to open Erin Fetherston. But according to our complex model algorithm, Friday was ruled by Sasha Pivovarova. After going MIA last season, the Russian finally returned to New York's runways. With her exclusive three-year Prada contract over, she opened the star-studded rag & bone show.

Fashion Rocks: Welsh Singer Duffy Tells of Discovering Black Music

Duffy, always learning.

Duffy, always learning.

Forgive Duffy, the 24-year-old breakout singer from Wales, if she seems like a bit of a naif. She doesn't use a stylist, she told us at Condé Nast's Fashion Rocks concert — she wears her mother's hand-me-downs. (“Always a good pair of tight jeans — that’s what she taught me. She used to sit in the bath for hours trying to make them fit.”) And she's still learning about the music world: “Well, I’m just getting into kind of the American hip-hop scene,” she said, “and I had the luxury of speaking to…” Here she forgot who it was who did a version of one of her songs; her rep couldn't remember, either. Then it came to her: “The Game! So the Game covered my song ‘Mercy,’ he kind of did a version with Cool and Dre, and they put a rap on it. I’m not going to lie to you and say I knew who the Game was, [and] I may not have owned one of his records, [but] at that point I got to speak to him on the phone and I bought one of his records. So I’m slowly kind of understanding American black music, which I think is amazing.”

LWD: The Sequel

From left, Erin Fetherston, Yigal Azrouël, Vicente Villarin.

From left, Erin Fetherston, Yigal Azrouël, Vicente Villarin.

Forget Nina Garcia's obsession with the LBD: It's the little white one that's going to be your next staple closet item. Last spring's mainstay made a return appearance at runways yesterday. Siri Tollerød bounced down the runway in a ruffled number that looked like a puffy cumulus cloud at Erin Fetherston, while choppy layers flowed off a baby-doll strapless party dress at Yigal Azrouël. Then, designer-to-watch Joanne Cordero Reyes combined sleeves of sheer textured pieces with a skirt made from silky sheets in her Vicente Villarin collection. Because surely nothing signals spring more than pure white.

The Fab Life: Backstage at Erin Fetherston

Erin Fetherston showed at Bryant Park last night, and New York's Fabiola Beracasa was backstage to see the chaos before Fetherston's fantasy collection debuted. The designer said her creative process was like "inhabiting a dream world," and it shows — the colors are soft and the material flows. Watch the video for a special look behind the scenes and get Fashion Week survival tips from Chanel Iman.

At Erin Fetherston Show, Wiedemann, Yaeger, and Boardman Weigh In on Palin Men

Yaeger and Boardman, patient hearts.

Yaeger and Boardman, patient hearts.

Not everyone obsesses exclusively over Levi Johnston, a.k.a. Sex on Skates. "I think Track's hot, I think Levi's hot, and the husband's hot," the inimitable (and apparently insatiable) Mickey Boardman told us at Erin Fetherston's show yesterday. Elettra Rossellini Wiedemann demurred on the question of the Palin hotness scale: "Um, I think that those are private family matters … okay, just kidding. I think Obama is cuter than any of them, so boo on them." Lynn Yaeger, meanwhile, finds a certain draw in the First Dude: "I like that sort of sad poet with the mohawk in Wasilla. But I know he's not for me because he races snowmobiles, and my family's Jewish, so we don't do anything like that. He's better off with Sarah." So where does Yaeger expect to find love? "Honey, I am the queen of 70 percent off. I do everything — the places, the timing, the stalking, the begging, the pleading, the buying and returning and the rebuying," she explained, by way of introducing the latest object of her affection. "You know that Comme des Garçons coat with the heart-shaped cutouts and the lips and everything this season? It's in every store, and I know nobody's going to buy it. I know it's waiting for me. We have a date in December, and I'm in no hurry." Boardman chimed in: "There's a lot of romance. It's not just a one-night stand with shopping for Lynn and me. You see it from across the room, figure out how it's going to work, you're falling in love. It's not just wham, bam, thank you, ma'am."

It’s Not Sexist to Talk About Hillary Clinton’s Mango Pantsuit

• Spring collections have a breezy feel and lots of bright colors as designers attempt to turn out unique pieces to lure customers to stores in this dour economic climate. [AP]

• Robin Givhan: "It is not sexist to have noticed that Sen. Hillary Clinton delivered her convention speech dressed in head-to-toe mango. Only an obstinately unaware person would have ignored this question: Senator, why are you dressed like a tropical fruit? One assumes it was to ensure an eye-catching photo for the history books and to underscore her 'sisterhood of the traveling pantsuits' legacy." [WP]

Thom Browne's friend read him all the Sarah Palin news over lunch one day. A source says, "Thom kept laughing and saying what an idiot she is. Then he was saying how Republicans are evil — and badly dressed! He started saying how Sarah is the worst-dressed woman on the planet and a total moron. He was really making fun of her." [NYP]
