Another Season, Another Stunner From Marc

Another Season, Another Stunner From Marc

Photo: Getty Images

It must get rather boring reading about fashion in New York but, I’m sorry, here it is again: Marc Jacobs rules this town. While other, younger designers spent today involved in a conversation Jacobs began eight months ago (full pants, wide shoulders, neutral palettes), Jacobs blasted forward with a collection that was unerringly focused, dynamic, and jam-packed with great ideas.

Let the man show you how it's done. »

Fug Girls: Eva Amurri, Why Were You Wearing Chris Benz Hammer Pants?

Rachel Hunter, Eva Amurri, and Susan Sarandon: Ladies, c'mon.

Monday was quite an emotional roller-coaster for us: Between the love in the air at Diesel and the jumpsuits on the brain at Proenza, we didn't think there was anything left to feel. But the celebrity audience at Chris Benz proved us wrong — clearly, whatever oxygen they were huffing before the show was steeped in pure, unadulterated wackitude, leaving us confused and in desperate need of some healing hooch.

Fug Girls Pleasantly Surprised by Olsen and Richie’s Cuteness at Proenza

If you put the two together, they almost make a full person!

If you put the two together, they almost make a full person!

Was there ever really any doubt that A-Dubs would skip Proenza Schouler in favor of cheering on Roger Federer as he won the U.S. Open for an unprecedented fifth time? Anyone who thought otherwise clearly doesn’t believe in the power of true love — or has never seen Anna’s reactions to Roger’s victories. We got home from Proenza Schouler this evening just in time to see Federer clinch it all, and La Bob leap out of her prime seat next to Federer’s girlfriend, clapping and smiling wildly. We have literally never seen her look so thrilled. This moment is going to make an amazing scene in the Wintour-Federer fan-fic we’re writing.

Marc Jacobs After-Party: Sean Avery Out, Elijah Wood In!

Our correspondents have moved from the show to the after-party. The latest: "It's a shitshow outside the Greenwich Hotel, with two lines going around either side of the building. Sean Avery got rebuffed, but Elijah Wood got in. They're at capacity, so no one in either line is getting in — just the VIPs who try their hand at the velvet rope on the corner. The publicists are just telling everyone to go get drinks. Not a bad idea."

Inside Marc Jacobs: Posh Spice Hair Emergency!

Our correspondents have just arrived! They report: "We just got here; the runway has a line of zigzagging mirrors down the center. It looks like the finale of A Chorus Line. And I don't know if I'm seeing things, very bad things, but Victoria Beckham just walked in and it would seem that she's cut off all her hair. It's horrendous! Like little tufts all over head. Jennifer Lopez just got here too (wearing a white dress). Posh kind of sneaked in behind her and hardly anyone noticed. Given the hair, probably for the best."

Backstage at Hervé Léger: Women Who Like Men

Our own Fabiola Beracasa braved the bandage dresses and bathing suits to head backstage at yesterday's Hervé Léger show, where she talked to designer Max Azria about the ideal Léger woman. Guess what? She likes men. Makes sense, given the sex appeal oozing from those skintight dresses.

Anna Chooses Roger Over Jack and Lazaro

And boy is she glad she did. We wondered earlier what A-Dubs would do today, with the U.S. Open men's final scheduled for 5 p.m., precisely when her darlings Proenza Schouler were to show their collection. Now we know: Anna followed her heart — her real one, the one that roams free of the glossy page or masthead (yes, we believe such a thing is possible) — and ditched her designer boys in favor of the strapping Swiss champion. And oh, how we were all rewarded: When Federer won, she leaped up in her seat and clapped her hands over her head, smiling like we've never seen. Love does that to you.

There are some days when we can't believe we have to drag ourselves to another fashion show, and there are others when we can't believe we have the privilege to even stick our toes in this phenomenal world. Last night, Calvin Klein's 40th-anniversary celebration on the actual freakin' High Line gave us enough moments of childlike wonderment to last for the next ten seasons.

Lose Your Arms in Oversize Sleeves Next Spring

Flared jeans made an earnest attempt at resurgence this spring. Sure, Posh Spice was snapped wearing them once or twice, but they didn't quite catch on with the masses. But what if those bell-bottoms were on the arms? Designers are showing flared arms next spring: Alexander Wang showed chunky stretched-out sweaters with mesh insets and oversize sleeves. Preen showed an arm-swallowing denim jacket with contrast stitching. And Zero Maria Cornejo showed a shorter version of an oversize sleeve with a silver hem on a slinky black cocktail dress. Check out the looks in the slideshow.

Is Leigh Lezark Morphing Into Anna Wintour?

Leigh's glasses are even darker than Anna's!

Leigh's glasses are even darker than Anna's!

Leigh Lezark has been keeping pretty busy this Fashion Week, plopping down into front rows galore. Yesterday we spotted her at Preen and today at Jill Stuart. We couldn't help but notice the little MisShape was channeling a bit of Anna Wintour at both shows, not deigning to take off her dark, square sunglasses and scarcely turning her head to look at the clothes going by. A look on the photo wires revealed Lezark wore her sunglasses at rag & bone, too. Furthermore, she barely smiles, if at all, in these shots. In fact, Anna might even smile more than Lezark. Maybe she's channeling La Wintour to feel extra authoritative as one of Style.com's virtual front-row correspondents? Hey, all she needs is a bob, some bangs, and highlights, and they're practically twins!

Fug Girls: Diesel Is Just One Big Make-Out Session

Daisy Lowe and Mark Ronson keep their hands to themselves at Diesel.

Something about Diesel inspires heavy petting. Two seasons ago we saw Demi Moore at the show getting handsy with Ashton Kutcher; this time, Daisy Lowe and a very dapper Mark Ronson clasped hands and rubbed each other's legs affectionately. Right behind them, former tennis ace Boris Becker had his left arm wrapped tightly around a hat-clad and very tan blonde, running his fingers up and down her bare arm as he sang along to a cover of Prince's "When Doves Cry." Whatever the orgiastic mojo is, someone should bottle it and get it on the shelves at Duane Reade — especially if it comes with a complimentary athlete.

Adam Lippes unleashed a vivid collection of eye candy inspired by MoMA’s "Color Chart" exhibition last spring. “Think jellybean explosion on Easter morning,” the Associated Press elaborated. Most critics admired a colorful, beaded stunner of a dress and a knit tank that was embroidered with multicolored discs meant to imitate Smarties candy. British Vogue claimed that “the real deliciousness came through in bright sporty separates,” and Style.com added that the designer “was at his best when he kept it bright and uncomplicated.” Fashion Week Daily was least impressed, finding the collection “disparate and unconnected,” and Style.com grappled with “some distracting straps and buckles,” but the playful display pleased the majority of critics. Concluded WWD, “Overall, the collection was as upbeat and interesting as it was wearable.”

Real Housewives Hit the Shows

Oh, joy: Today we've spotted not one but two stars of The Real Housewives of New York City — combined with yesterday's Whitney Port sighting, Fashion Week has become reality-television heaven (or hell, depending on how you feel about these things). First we spotted Bethenny Frankel sitting front row at Jill Stuart, just a few seats down from Michelle Trachtenberg (that's right: Frankel is on par with Gossip Girl when it comes to seating). Then later, at Catherine Malandrino, we spied fellow Housewives star Luanne de Lesseps sitting right across the runway from us. We hit her up after the show; she said she wasn't being filmed at Malandrino but that she was pretty sure they were filming Bethenny at Jill Stuart, explaining that not all designers are keen on having the reality-TV crews storming around. De Lesseps said she planned to attend a few more shows, noting that, "Kelly Bensimmon invited me to Malo." Well! Does this mean Luanne and Kelly are becoming BFFs? Or at least in the staged way? We see a very jealous Jill Zarin in our Bravo-watching future.

Sheer Genius

Camisoles? Slips? Who needs 'em! Sheer is here for spring, as the runways keep rolling out transparent touches on pretty much everything, from the tops at Verrier and Preen, to the skirts at Rubin Singer and Y-3. And did someone see the pants? So far Nicole Miller, Erin Fetherston, Miss Sixty, and Reyes all showed sheer below the belt, only covering the feminine bits with boy-short bloomers. So it looks like very, very little is shielding your skin this spring. Um, we're already hitting the gym now — who's with us? For more sheer garments, check out our slideshow.

Economic Hardships Discussed at Miss Sixty

Perry Farrell, who would happily live as a pauper.

How is the economy affecting folks in attendance at yesterday's Miss Sixty show? Perhaps we should've known better, but we had to ask. Wichy Hassan, Miss Sixty's creative director: "I really don't care about the money because otherwise it would be a sad collection." (He's Italian and getting half off on everything in the U.S.) Ugly Betty's Becki Newton noted that her television character, Amanda, wouldn't be caught dead wearing the same thing twice, but that in real life, she has to be more practical: "I think there's no shame in mixing it up, wearing accessories again. I plan on wearing these [Gucci fringe] boots every single day to justify how much they actually cost." Perry Ferrell, who showed up in a supertight pair of red, size 0 women's jeans, got a little sentimental. "I could care less about money. It just floats around, you know what I mean? If I can get there, I get there. If I can't afford it, try next year. I've lived in my car, I've lived out on the beach, I'd take showers down by the beach. It sounds terrible, but it's a really good life." Finally, Blake Lively is getting in touch with her frugal side. "I try to save energy, which saves money? The cheaper lightbulbs are the green lightbulbs, so I filled my house with those. I do splurge, though, on shoes. I shouldn't be talking too much about saving money."

Freja Beha Is Sunday’s Top Model

From left, Freja at William Rast, Agyness Deyn at Costello Tagliapietra, Ali Stephens at Jonathan Saunders

It took Agyness Deyn until day three to finally make her spring 2009 runway debut in New York, by opening Costello Tagliapietra. All-American girl Ali Stephens closed Preen in a stunner of a sheer black frock designed with laces, grommets, and exposed zippers, and closed Jonathan Saunders in a navy and green flowing silk gown. That means her Calvin Klein runway exclusive is no more! The same "ex–Calvin exclusive" status goes for Toni Garrn, who was spotted opening Hervé Léger. So who does Calvin have on lockdown? Danish beauty Freja Beha packed her Sunday schedule. First she closed the Hervé Léger show, then opened Y-3, and then opened and closed Justin Timberlake's William Rast show (Erin Wasson was in the audience but didn't walk). Since JT picked her lovable androgynous face for both ends of his first New York runway (not to mention her schedule), Beha takes Sunday.

BCBG’s Shoes Have Seriously Won Us Over

We want them all.

We want them all.

Everyone's eyes may be on Nicole Richie and Christina Ricci, or on the sheerer-than-sheer pants, but some of us are looking a little further south. At the shoes, ahem. This is the perfect time to get an inkling on what the next "It" shoe may be. So imagine our surprise when the hottest shoes this season (so far) have come from … BCBG? Can it be? The most junior of all Max Azria's lines has trumped all the weekend's shows with a barrage of heels that are thick, high, and gorgeous. From a cream-color exotic-skin platform to silver spats with a coral heel to yet more skins, the label took a major risk with its accessories — and it paid off. We can't wait to get one in every color. And the bags are pretty luscious too. Whoever their new accessory designer is, give him or her a raise. Stat.

Britney and Rihanna Stun at the VMAs, But in Very Different Ways

All that free Champagne and Chambord at Fashion Week finally caught up to us last night, so we skipped the parties to watch a very different kind of fashion parade on the tube: the Video Music Awards. We're glad we stayed in because seeing Britney not only functioning in society (if you can call the VMAs that) but looking so well and radiant warmed our hearts. However we felt peeved that the celebrities we were hoping to see on our front rows were all the way over in La La Land. At least now that the awards are over, they can come to New York where they ought to be (ahem, Michael Phelps and Rihanna). Just to give you a little West Coast flavor with your giant New York Fashion Week entrée, we've composed a fashion yearbook of the glittery West Coast spectacle, including Rihanna, Michael Phelps, Christina Aguilera, and more! At Y-3, Vincent Gallo Explains His Attraction to the Palin Daughters

When we asked Vincent Gallo what he thinks about Sarah Palin, he lashed out about a Gawker post that he found offensive. “Gawker had some slut named Molly Friedman who quoted that I made some sexual gestures toward her [Palin’s] young daughters. What I said was that they’re a very handsome family. I said that I thought she, her husband, and her children were very handsome, and that the idea of them being the vice-presidential family was delightful in my mind,” Gallo told us at the Y-3 show on Sunday. “They said that I insinuated that I found them sexy. And I never said that,” he insisted. “I said they were a handsome family, and I found her watching her youngest daughter holding the baby very sweet and cute.” Gallo told us how the whole mix-up happened. “The girl who wrote for Gawker was some drunk young girl smoking like a truck driver, some club chick, and she was like eavesdropping on somebody else that I was talking to. I was offended that Gawker would accuse me of something that would be illegal. And I found it shocking that they would send out, like a club whore like that to do their work.” What else about “whores”? “If [Palin] was a left-wing whore, it would be fine that she had kids and a job. Because she’s a good American and a fine, respectable woman, it has somehow infuriated the Socialist media.” He added, perhaps unnecessarily, “That’s how I feel.”

Whitney at Thursday's Lorick presentation.

It was celebrity madness at the Diane Von Furstenberg show yesterday afternoon — Cathy Horyn and Racked have rundowns of all the luminaries, from Graydon Carter to Leighton Meester, J.Lo to Ray Kelly — but our heart skipped a beat later last night at the DVF after-party at 60 Thompson. When we walked in, we nearly smacked right into Whitney Port. Cameras on tripods were planted in the corners and aimed squarely at the Hills star, who was having what looked like a forced conversation with some suits. We were admiring her short gray dress with black lace detail when a MTV-ish fellow shoved a release form in our faces and asked us to sign. We obliged, obviously — the back of our head maybe appearing on The Hills would be a dream come true!

What If Anna Left Federer for Timberlake? Just What If?

"The Vogue editrix dashed from Calvin Klein's High Line bash to sit at Justin Timberlake's William Rast show at the Roseland Ballroom Sunday night. The minute the show finished, Anna bolted for the backstage, though she had a little trouble getting past a burly guard. A Rast staffer quickly recognized her and led her right in and up to Timberlake. 'Hey! Thanks so much for coming!' Timberlake exclaimed. 'My pleasure,' Wintour replied, adding that she liked the show but had to dash. 'Can we get together soon?' Wintour asked. 'Of course. Email me and we'll make it work,' Timberlake replied." Rag & Bone Gets Mixed Reviews, Nicole Miller Surprises, and Wang Gets Sporty

And so it begins! The shows are in full swing, and the critics are weighing in. We'll be compiling the general consensus throughout the week.

Rag & Bone
After opening their first rag & bone boutique on Christopher Street last week to a flurry of eager shoppers, David Neville and Marcus Wainwright wooed the rest of the fashion world with a tough and rough-around-the-edges collection inspired by England's music scene. The critics were divided on the parade of punkish denim and leather jackets, exposed zippers, checked button-downs, and miniskirts. Style.com sighed over the theme, complaining "it's all been done before," and even venturing that "the fit on one or two of their double-breasted jackets looked off." WWD agreed, writing that the designs "felt repetitive and at times lacked personality," though it allowed that the rock-inspired zippers and studs added edge to rag & bone's classic suits. But British Vogue championed the show as "one of the strongest Rag & Bone collections we've yet seen" — particularly loving the floral accents mixed with leather — and asserted that Neville and Wainwright "remain true their English roots and they always get it right." Celeb fan Kelly Osbourne agreed, declaring to The Daily, "They are masters at androgynous wear."

Justin Timberlake Fails to Dance With Fug Girls at William Rast

Justin Timberlake and business partner Trace Ayala.

Justin Timberlake and business partner Trace Ayala.

We figured Justin Timberlake's hotly touted "My Name Is William Rast" show would be chock-full of gossip, but we never expected intrigue before we'd even taken our seats — in fact, things got sassy while we were still standing outside in line and a red BMW convertible full of dudes slowly cruised the line, blaring R&B slow jams and winking appreciatively at the ladies. If they'd turned their heads to the right, they would've realized they were also technically cruising people who had tickets to Hairspray, but the huddled masses of scantily clad Timberlake fans probably made for more satisfying ogling.

But there was MUCH better ogling inside. »
