Abaete’s ‘Underpinnings’ Are Sweet, Not Slutty

When we read in Abaete's program notes that the collection was inspired by "elements of underpinnings: boning, exposed casing, lingerie, girdles and netting," we thought we were in for a slut parade. We couldn't have been more wrong. What followed was a lovely collection of flirty cocktail dresses with mini and full skirts in shades of soft red, bright yellow, and blue. But we were puzzled by the "underpinning shorts" with see-through panels on the side they resembled transparent biker shorts. How can one walk down the street with the sides of their thighs and hips exposed to the world? But the nude corsets with white boning were hardly stereotypical, and actually looked rather sweet topping a full skirt.
