Oscar de la Renta won't attend the Met's opening night for the first time in twenty years. He's upset that the costumes Renée Fleming will wear onstage were designed by Karl Lagerfeld, John Galliano, and Christian Lacroix. He said he's not taking it personally but felt “American fashion should have been represented.” He even called the Met to complain, but manager Peter Gelb said, “I explained to him that I don’t really think about nationalities or anything other than artistic appropriateness when we’re making decisions about directors or designers … we’re not a boutique.” Sounds like that convo went well!
