Economy Forces Retailers to Cut Spring Orders

Retailers nationwide are cutting orders by at least 10 to 15 percent for spring. Cautious New York flagships are lowering their buys 7 to 10 percent and banking on tourism to keep sales afloat. "Conservative" spending is the buzzword among both buyers and designers — Diane Von Furstenberg, Oscar de la Renta, and Thakoon are relying more heavily on international markets, while others, like Doo-Ri Chung, are working with fewer embellishments to lower prices.
