Madonna’s Hairy Green Dress Is Actually Louis Vuitton

Madonna and Guy Ritchie settled their divorce. But who cares when she wore that green dress to the Gucci UNICEF party last night? At first, when we saw it, we thought maybe she had dipped herself in 24-karat-real-gold paint and then rolled around in a bunch of shredded money because she's Madonna and she can. But what looks like a dead Fraggle in this picture is actually a fabulous piece of Louis Vuitton from the spring 2009 collection. This all but confirms Madonna is the face of the house's spring 2009 campaign. Wearing Louis to a Gucci event? If we raised our eyebrows even higher, our hairline would eat them. We do hope Madge is styled better in the ads. The dress is fabulous, just not on her, here. We must say, though, her hair and makeup look gorgeous. Who says divorce is bad for the skin?

Hot Male Models Play in the Pool, Fight With Stuffed Animals

You need an end-of-day blog-me-up. Tomorrow's weather forecast includes snow, another media outlet folded, Project Runway is doomed, and the economy is just lying there like a cold wet noodle in the bottom of the kitchen sink. But the sun is shining in Brazil! Jeremy Kost photographed scantily clad male models soaking up those luscious rays of New York's yore in a fashion spread for Junior magazine, the Brazilian version of Out. The issue comes out mid-December, but it's not sold in this country, so Jeremy sent us some outtakes from the shoot, which you can see in the slideshow, pool fighting on alligator floaties included. Jeremy also sent us some outtakes of models from a shoot for the issue of Anthem magazine coming out the first week of December. He calls that one "a take on childhood innocence with a dark turn … As the clothes come off, the guys become more aggressive with the masculine stuffed objects, eventually tearing the stuffing out!" Click ahead for the carnage!

Condé Nast Shuts Down ‘DNR’

We just got word that Condé Nast just shut down DNR, WWD's brother menswear publication. The November 24 issue will be its last and WWD will absorb DNR's coverage online and in print. Patrick McCarthy, editorial director of W, WWD, and Footwear News, announced the closure today. “With the men’s and women’s apparel businesses sharing many of the same issues, we believe that integrating men’s coverage through WWD’s daily print and digital resources is the best way to serve our global audience,” McCarthy said in a statement. According to a press release:

In addition to daily men’s coverage in print and online, WWD will publish in-depth WWDMen’s reports every Thursday beginning in January, special sections during key fashion events, and WWDMen’s Collections magazines twice each year. WWD.com will add a dedicated WWDMen’s channel in December.

No word yet on what kind of layoffs will occur.

Move Over, Target: Cathy Horyn Gushes Over Norma Kamali for Wal-Mart

In her latest blog post, Times fashion critic Cathy Horyn gets all lovey-dovey over Wal-Mart, professing her longtime love for the big-box store. You never know when the jean shorts are going to go on sale, right? Well, according to her, Wal-Mart's on the up-and-up because of their collaboration with designer Norma Kamali, a line of red, white, and black casual separates that's part of a long-term contract. Oh, you didn't know about it? Not your fault.

Isn't it time Wal-Mart steps on Target's toes a little? »

Peaches Geldof Hates Victoria Beckham’s Style

Hard-hitting journalist Peaches Geldof muses on trends she's looking forward to in 2009 in her latest Nylon column and expertly uses the word "sage": "Most people who know me know I don’t follow fashion. I mean, I just dyed the tips of my hair black for God’s sake. I hate stars who look totally overstyled, like Victoria Beckham; give me Courtney Love, with her babydoll nighties and ripped fishnet tights, any day. For me, fashion is about pushing boundaries. Vivienne Westwood once told me that people who aren’t creative or have no love for art don’t dress up, I asked her why people should and she replied simply, 'Because it’s fun.' Sage advice." [Nylon]

Hammer Time: How to Wear Harem Pants and Actually Look Good

M.C. Hammer probably wishes he'd invested in harem pants right about now, because they're coming back in a big way. We spotted the droopy drawers on the spring 2009 runways of Phi, Proenza Schouler, Miss Sixty, Nicole Miller, Doo.Ri, Diane Von Furstenberg, and Dries Van Noten, among others. And that's not even counting the non-runway lines that are popping up at stores now. But the thing is, we wonder if people actually wear these things. The answer is a resounding yes. Sure, it takes some guts, but if worn right, they're both classy and comfortable. Click ahead to see how to wear the genie-inspired trend and where you can buy a pair in NYC.

Rogan to Do Second Target Line

Rogan is doing a second Target line based on their ecofriendly Loomstate line. The main Loomstate collection, including organic-cotton blouses for $192 and organic sweaters for $161, is sold at Saks and Barneys Co-Op. The Target diffusion line will go for $14.99 to $44.99. It will launch on April 19 — in time for Earth Day on April 22 — and be available through May 16. Though the first Rogan line launched in Barneys, WWD writes:

Whether Target starts its Loomstate line off at a high-end retailer remains to be seen. These days, Target is stressing its low prices and the “pay less” part of its “Expect More, Pay Less” tag line and may want to distance itself from the haute crowd.

Everyone from Proenza Schouler to Karl Lagerfeld has done diffusion lines for stores like Target or H&M, but most designers don't go back for a second round. Many say doing such lines more than once cheapens their brand. But could Target — whose profits fell 23.8 percent in the third quarter — be trying to do just that by launching a diffusion line with a designer whose wares don't average $700? Are they worried collaborations like the one with Alexander McQueen was too highbrow? Because we thought that was exactly the point.

Anna Wintour Will NOT Work for Barack Obama

Anna Wintour Will NOT Work for Barack Obama

Photo: Patrick McMullan

This week rumors emerged that Anna Wintour would leave Vogue when her contract expires soon. We speculated that if that happened, she'd spend her days sculpting her guns in her newly expanded gym in her Mastic Beach mansion. But according to MSNBC, "at least one person* in the magazine industry" had even grander ideas than we did — that she'd accept a "cultural post of some sort" in the Barack Obama White House. A Vogue rep told MSNBC the rumor is completely false and that Anna "won't be working for Obama in any way." But just for fun, can we imagine what it would be like to have A-Dubs in the White House? As, say, the "National Style Adviser" or "Secretary of Chic" who oversaw the Committee of Sartorial Awareness, whose mandate was to methodically rid the nation of things like Crocs, Lauren Conrad's clothing line, leggings, fringed moccasins, and clashing? Obama people: We dare you to make our day.

*Does that mean if we say we hear she'll join a nunnery in Tibet, MSNBC will devote an entire item to us?

Michelle Obama Style Book in the Works
Michelle Obama Style Book in the Works

Former Mademoiselle editor Mandi Norwood will write a book about Michelle Obama's style for release next spring. "Not since Jackie O have we had a first lady become a fashion icon," she notes. It's unclear what the book will be like, but we're hoping it's something like the Sex and the City movie book, which includes a guide to every outfit worn in the movie and identifies the labels of every piece of clothing. Steve & Barry’s Files for Bankruptcy Again

Steve & Barry's filed for bankruptcy late last night, less than five months after its first Chapter 11 filing. Less than three months ago, Bay Harbour Management and York Capital Management rescued the 276-store chain with $168 million. However, in These Economic Times, no one has money to rescue Steve & Barry's again, so the chain plans to liquidate. Sarah Jessica Parker's and Venus Williams's clothing lines will have to find new homes. [WWD]

Fug Girls: Tyra Is Our Own ‘National Treasure: Book of Secrets’

Maybe we're improving at this whole prognosticating thing — we just nailed the Project Runway winner for the first time, and now we were two-thirds correct in our America's Next Top Model predictions. Tomboy boxer McKey bested tomboy mallrat Samantha to snag the title, earning herself a billboard in Times Square and a year of spewing marketing dreck and "inspirational advice" on future cycles of America's Next Top Model. But as usual, it was Miss Tyra who stole the show. Read on for our take on her otherworldly shoulder pads — if you did not notice them, it might be because they gruesomely blinded you — and the rest of the fairly run-of-the-mill finale.

Lifetime Files Countersuit in ‘Project Runway’ Legal Mess

Doomed, we tell you. Doomed!

Doomed, we tell you. Doomed!Photo: Courtesy of Bravo

Late Tuesday night Lifetime dug its boot deeper into the Project Runway legal mess. The network filed a countersuit against the Weinstein Co., NBC Universal, and Bravo demanding exclusive rights over the show. To recap: First, NBC sued the Weinstein Co. for selling the show to Lifetime, then Lifetime filed a motion to move the case from state to federal court, then the Weinstein Co. sued Bravo, and now Lifetime is countersuing all of 'em! It's an orgy of lawsuits, people! We may as well call it Project Lawsuit from now on. Searching for the proper metaphor to describe it is like searching for the proper metaphor to describe the economic crisis. It's like when the person who lives upstairs leaves the bathtub running and forgets about it — at first the paint on the ceiling just bubbles, but then the bubbles grow down the wall, and before you know it, water is gushing into your lighting fixtures and then out of the ceiling like a waterfall, ruining your hardwood floors, making the time it takes to clean it all up that much longer. And then you go to the super and he says he doesn't know when the electrician can come fix your light because it's Thanksgiving and the flooring people are out all week too, and you have no idea when you'll get your apartment back to normal. Ugh! So the moral of the story is, Project Runway shall remain off the air indefinitely, most likely for a very long time. And the economy is still a soggy floorboard.
