Update: Reports stating that Bonpoint was approached by a White House stylist were greatly exaggerated. A spokesperson for the company told us: "Bonpoint is a great fan of Obama and would very much like to dress his children for the inauguration, but there wasn’t any contact between Obama’s people and Bonpoint." Now you know.

Upscale French kids label Bonpoint was approached by a White House stylist about dressing seven-year-old Sasha and ten-year-old Malia Obama on Inauguration Day. The brand says it already delivered day and night looks for both. Day looks include a gray dress and wool coat for Malia and blue velvet dress and tweed coat for Sasha, while the evening outfits include a cream satin dress for Malia and gray satin dress for Sasha with semi-precious stones in the neckline. A Bonpoint spokesman told WWD, “It was all highly secretive, but we know we're in competition with a lot of brands, likely most of them American." Was highly secretive — not so anymore! We know they're only seven and ten, but would the Obama girls wear these garments after we've all read about them? Surely every burgeoning fashionista recognizes the importance of surprise. But it would seem imprudent for the Obamas to put their girls in dresses by a French label, especially in These Times. Then again, is discussing the clothes of a seven and ten-year-old to this extent any less so?
