Belts, Bags, and Bourbon at Billy Reid

There is a little southern asylum on Bond Street, where the handshakes are firm, the bourbon is no charge, and the fashion is impeccable. It’s a store called Billy Reid, named after the fashion designer, and it’s been open since October, the first northern outpost of a mini-empire that stretches from Dallas to Charleston. Reid himself resides in Florence, Alabama, but he may be a familiar face to some around here. He had a women’s line under the name William Reid that was much admired before failing in the aftermath of 9/11. He remade himself and has come back stronger than ever. His clothes have a vintage feel, but with a modern edge, and though they are not the cheapest, they are the kind of beautifully made garments you will wear for a very long time. He also has a handsome collection of belts, shoes, and luggage. You can see it all for yourself at an open house they’re throwing at the store tonight, 6 to 9 p.m., with excellent food from Mercat and equally excellent bourbon from Woodford Reserve. Plus, you can pick up an item or two from their season-ending sale at up to 75 percent off.
