Since Katie Grand left Pop to helm Condé Nast’s Love, taking most of her Pop staff with her, the industry has been wondering if Pop will ever come to know its former glory. A new editor-in-chief and editorial board have just been appointed and charged with reinventing the magazine for its debut September 2009 issue. The editor-in-chief is 27-year-old Dasha Zhukova. Dasha is a Russian socialite, daughter of oil magnate Alexander Zhukov, and part of a generation known as the “spoilt bratskies.” She launched the Kova & T clothing line with a friend in 2006 and is “influential and highly respected in the art world” as a founder of the Garage Centre for Contemporary Culture, according to Grazia. The eyebrow-raising editorial board includes fashion icon Daphne Guinness and art director Julia Restoin-Roitfeld, daughter of French Vogue editor-in-chief, Carine Roitfeld.
Pop co-founder Ashley Heath will stay on as editorial director with Zhukova. She told WWD, “Dasha represents a fantastic combination of style, intelligence, youth, and cultural clout.” Sounds great, but what does she know about running a magazine? Also, will Julia Restoin-Roitfeld be able to devote enough time and energy into revamping an already brilliantly conceived publication between being a scenester, modeling for Mango, and being sexy? Though we would do really obscene things to own just a portion of Daphne Guinness’s wardrobe, is she able to lift a finger? We wonder what Grand thinks of all this.
