This Toilet-Paper Wedding Dress Is Truly Amazing

Cheap Chic Weddings just declared a winner of their toilet-paper wedding dress contest. The grand prize went to Ann Kagawa Lee of Honolulu, who made this spectacular confection from nothing more than toilet paper, tape, and glue. It's mind-blowing. Just look at the texture, the detail, the hat! She was inspired by Gone With the Wind and Japanese origami. According to CheapChicWeddings.com, "Her dress has been compared to an Oscar de la Renta couture gown." Let us all take a moment to admire her hard work, attention — nay, commitment — to detail, and her vision. Because this kind of craftsmanship deserves more than her award of just $1,000 and a permanent spot in Ripley's Believe it or Not museum.

Video: Grazia Puts Chace Crawford in an Epically Awkward Situation

Bless our dear friends over at Grazia. They have ingeniously, repeatedly captured Chace Crawford on camera at his most awkward, all by way of fashion. First they videotaped his fashion quiz, in which he actually said, "I thought beige was, like, dark." But it's okay — he's pretty! In their latest installment of "The Awkward Adventures of Chace Crawford," his good looks might not even be able to save him: Grazia forces Chace to find a fashionably dressed girl backstage at the Hard Rock Calling festival. He selects a girl named Georgina for reasons, though unknown to us, that seem anything but lost on Georgina (note the irony of her name). She wears a white lace dress and brown mid-calf stacked-heel boots. Georgina does most of the talking, while looking at Chace like she wants to jump his bones and furiously rip little bits of skin off him. Chace, meanwhile, tries to form coherent sentences and admits he knows nothing about Topshop and Portobello Market. Watch and please tell us if you, too, feel embarrassed for everyone involved here.

Lisa Perry Brings Her Retro Styles to Spring Street

A dress from the spring 2009 collection.

A dress from the spring 2009 collection.

Lisa Perry is unleashing her mod, sixties-inspired dresses and skirts on Spring Street with a new pop-up, open tomorrow through August. It's a cheery, retro space, with curvy chairs, colorful dots on the walls, and squares of Bazooka bubblegum scattered in the front windows. Oversize candy-colored duffels are displayed near the entrance, and neon color-block dresses, white-trimmed miniskirts, and sleeveless frocks with circular pockets fill the racks. The new shop stocks the Lisa Perry home line as well, including bright vinyl and floral-print felt pillows, duvets, and sheets. And shelves in the rear of the store are filled with coffee-table tomes on art, music, and photography, making the spot a convenient stop off for gifts.

Lisa Perry, 134 Spring St., nr. Wooster St. (212-431-7467); M—S (11—7), Su (noon—6).

Miuccia Prada’s Ex-Assistant Unveils His First Vionnet Collection

In 2006, Vionnet relaunched after a 67 year hiatus. Since then, the label has hosted a revolving door of designers. Rodolfo Paglialunga currently helms design for the house, and, under new owners Matteo Marzotto and Gianni Castiglioni, just presented his first Vionnet collection for cruise 2010. Paglialunga spent thirteen years as Miuccia Prada's assistant. He said he carefully researched Madeleine Vionnet's Grecian-inspired work for his first attempt. Paglialunga will make his runway debut at Paris Fashion Week for spring 2010. See his new cruise collection in the slideshow.

Kanye West Interns at the Gap?

Us Weekly reports that Kanye West is interning at the Gap's New York offices: "He works all the time, and one Friday night recently, he stayed until 12 am. He's learning the fashion business from the inside and trying to do it quietly." A secret internship! We can't expect him to personally hype a gig at the Gap as much as, say, his Louis Vuitton sneaker line. In December, rumor had it Kanye was offering his intern services for free at Louis and Raf Simons. And now he's at Gap. Huh. [Jezebel]

Fremont’s Design Duo Channels the Forties for Fall

Four years ago, Brittany Pham and Devin Carlson met through mutual friends in Orange County and launched Fremont, a line of men’s and women’s clothing. The company’s aesthetic is based on the “leisure-filled, resort-hopping lifestyle of the late sixties and early seventies,” says Pham. “Fremont Street is the block in Las Vegas where all the first hotels and clubs started cropping up. The Rat Pack partied there and it was such a great look of classic and refined without being too dressed up. We try to make clothes that really can go from day to night like that.” After seasons of lighter, seventies-inspired pieces, the pair went darker for fall, citing an influence stemming from the less-than-frivolous forties. “I looked at old photos of my relatives from the thirties and forties and got a strong sense of their overwhelming perseverance during hard economic times similar to today,” says Devin. Though we love the elegant long silk dresses and dashing double-breasted suits, the fall collection is actually heavy on chic separates to mix and match. Fremont’s pieces, which feature careful attention to detail and fit, range in price from $80 for basic jersey tops to $300 to $450 for the dresses. It's this style-conscious, yet easy-to-wear look that has fans swooning: Liv Tyler and Jessica Alba have both been photographed in items and we hear that Alexander Wang was recently spotted scooping up a sweater at Opening Ceremony. Lucky for Californians, Fremont has their own boutique that opened last year in Los Angeles, but for those of us here in NYC, the line is also carried at Albertine, Pixie Market, and Barneys, and on 80sPurple.com and RevolveClothing.com. Check out our favorite pieces from fall (coming to stores later this summer).

The World Gold Council Saves Carmen Marc Valvo From Showing at Citrine Again

Anything is better than mannequins in a Flatiron bar.

Anything is better than mannequins in a Flatiron bar.Photo: Imaxtree

For Fashion Week in February, the recession forced some designers with slashed show budgets into unfortunate circumstances. Among them was Carmen Marc Valvo, who staged a presentation at douchetastic downtown bar-lounge Citrine, probably because they let him show there for free. For September Fashion Week, Valvo will not return to Citrine, thanks to some hefty, unexpected new sponsors, including NASDAQ. Valvo will tape a runway show of his spring 2010 collection and show the video to about 300 people at a cocktail party in the NASDAQ building in Times Square. It may not scream "glamour," but at least it's close to Bryant Park and probably has spiffy elevator banks. Additionally, he'll broadcast runway-show footage on screens in Times Square. The World Gold Council (which was founded by the world's leading gold miners and aims to stimulate and maximize the demand for gold) is paying for that fanciness.

This sounds so much better than a show at Citrine (which has no elevator bank, mind you). The World Gold Council and NASDAQ may sound like awkward sponsors, but they could make for amazing gift bags, including two of our favorite things: free gold and stocks!

The College Professor Whose College Style Was Perfect for Pornos

The day our Video Look Book cameras caught college professor Sean Starr, he was skipping a U.N. conference to go shoe shopping. "I’ve always just worn clothes that people make fun of me about,” he said. "I used to dress up in toilet paper when I was a little kid and call myself Juan Bizzaro.” When he was 18, he took a road trip to L.A. and landed an extra job in a porn movie. "They made everyone get in these weird outfits but they’re like, ‘No you’re perfect — you can wear what you’ve got on.’ ” Watch the Video Look Book to see how much his style has normalized since.

Kanye’s Louis Vuitton Sneakers Have Already Sold Out

This is the Jasper.

This is the Jasper.Photo: Courtesy of Louis Vuitton

Rumor had it the launch of Kanye West's Louis Vuitton sneaker line would be pushed back until the end of the year. But it turns out they actually hit stores today. Not that it matters, because if you haven't already secured your pair, you can't get them! We'd hold your hands if we could. A salesperson at the Louis Vuitton store on Greene Street said people have been calling about the shoes since January and the waiting lists are full. If you really, really, really, really want a pair you can sign up for a "wish list," in case some become available. But the chances of that happening are about as likely as hell freezing over, grass turning blue, or Anna Wintour rocking Amber Rose's signature do.

However, if you're not completely emotionally crippled by this news, If It's Hip, It's Here has more details on the shoes, including names and exact prices. The Mr. Hudson costs $840, while the Jasper goes for $990 to $1,140. And the Don goes for $870 to $960.

Rachel Zoe’s Getting Into the GOOP Game

Okay it's not technically related to GOOP, but the stylist and Bravo reality star is about to launch her own daily newsletter called "The Zoe Report." If the Internet worked for Gwyneth Paltrow, it can work for her, too. The mailing list sign-up is currently all that appears on Zoe's new site (along with the requisite image of Zoe looking pensive). "The chic variety of accessories, apparel, and other items featured in the Zoe Report are carefully chosen by our editorial team of fashion addicts — ahem — experts," reads the Editorial Policy. Zoe might not pick the items herself, but she swears advertising interests have nothing to do with it: "Never in a million years would we accept money (or Maxfield giftcards) in exchange for editorial endorsement. That would be bananas. The bad kind." Zoe also says the newsletter is "going to be bananas." Don't get confused. Since we've been brushing up on our "bananas" translations in preparation for the season premiere of the Rachel Zoe Project, we can confirm that that means the nicely yellow kind that are just slightly tender with a hint of brown speckles. But maybe it would help if she worked "plantains" or something into her lingo.

1,800 American Apparel Workers Could Be Deported

1,800 American Apparel Workers Could Be Deported

Photo: Maura Murnane

A federal probe has found that about 1,800 American Apparel workers are working illegally in the U.S. No wonder the company has been a longtime advocate of immigration reform. About 1,600 employees of the L.A. factory are working under "suspect and not valid" eligibility filings. The eligibility of 200 more to work in this country also could not be verified due to discrepancies. The 1,800 workers in question comprise about a third of the factory workers in L.A. But American Apparel isn't worried about losing money because of this. They say they've got a lot of inventory stocked up that should tide them over for a while in case they have to search for 1,800 deportee replacements.

Company executives note the eligibility papers can be easily faked and that they have let go employees whose eligibility was proven false in the past. If any of this hampers American Apparel's ability to roll out new product lines, that might not be such a bad thing for, you know, humanity.

Michael Jackson’s Tour Costumes Would Have Been Spectacular

It goes without saying, but more details have emerged about the costumes Michael Jackson planned to wear in his This Is It tour. His costume designers had re-created his iconic looks for each of the 26 songs on the set list. For "Thriller" that meant a red leather jacket. But Jackson wanted to "take it to the next level," so fiber-optic lights were sewn into the jacket. Audiences would have enjoyed a surprise light show timed to the music. [Style Watch/People]

Beyoncé’s Launching a Sasha Fierce Clothing Line

Beyoncé’s Launching a Sasha Fierce Clothing Line

Photo: Courtesy of Sasha Fierce (which is the best photo credit ever typed in this blog's history)

Beyoncé and her mother, Tina Knowles, have noticed something: The words "House of Deréon" don't mean anything to potential customers. (It sounds made-up and insignificant, but according to Wikipedia, the name Deréon comes from Beyoncé's grandmother Agnèz Deréon, who worked as a seamstress.) "Sasha Fierce," however, resonates with young (possibly misguided) girls who might buy Beyoncé and Tina's clothes. So they're launching a new line for back-to-school called Sasha Fierce, inspired by Beyoncé's stage presence. Tina describes the collection as a reinterpretation of Beyoncé's Thierry Mugler costumes.

Best Bet: Chill Out

Best Bet: Chill Out

Photo: Courtesy of Sur la Table

Fourth of July weekend is rapidly approaching, which means most of New York will be congregating at rooftop barbecues or park cookouts. This glass chiller carafe from Sur La Table provides a portable alternative to lugging around an old-school cooler. Just stow the base in the freezer the night before, pop the carafe on at the barbecue, and your white wine or sangria will stay cool for four hours (without getting watered down with ice cubes). After grilling season ends, the carafe can be used without the base for pouring red wine.

$59.95 at Sur La Table or online.
