New Couture Slideshows: Chanel, Valentino, Gaultier

It's the last and final day of couture, which means new shows! Jean Paul Gaultier wowed everyone with his Croc, furs, and sequins. Chanel and Valentino both had amazing sheer headpieces and runaway hemlines. Of course, the best way to see these is in full-screen mode. Because it is couture, after all.

CROC Overalls and Mickey Rourke Debut at Jean Paul Gaultier Couture

We don't know what it is, but all these things just fit.

Highlights from the Jean Paul Gaultier show today include:

1. The crocodile overalls, worn over fur.
2. The Magnum comdoms handed out for free before the show.
3. The furs, which are sure to have PETA loading up on extra fake blood right now.
4. Unlikely showgoer Mickey Rourke, who had a prime, front-row seat but relinquished it for the fifth row when the show started so that he could talk to fans.
5. The crocodile overalls.
6. The highly caloric and fattening chocolate-covered ice-cream bars girls tried to feed guests before the show. Update: The Magnums are actually the name of the ice cream bars.

Outlaws of the Border Is Already Making Waves

Husband-and-wife team Gautier Pellegrin and Lindsay Jones founded Outlaws of the Border just a season ago (their first-ever collection debuted in spring 2009), and already the response has been tremendous. On top of a WWD cover, rack space in a slew of stores (Eva, Collective Hardware, In God We Trust, to name a few), and a feature on FadMashion.com, the duo has a notable fan in their corner: Heidi Klum. The label, named for a book about Jesse James, is heavy on draped, romantic looks and dark fabrics. “I have always been drawn to Romantic imagery and beautiful objects,” Lindsay explains. “The fall collection is set to an overall moonlit theme so that the collection appears to be silhouettes under moonlight.” And if the line sounds a bit too Edgar Allan Poe for your liking, the tailoring should win you over. The pieces are simple, elegant, and well constructed — even when trendy (like harem pants). “The goal is lasting pieces with elegant silhouettes.” Check out some of our favorite pieces from the fall collection.

How the House of Christian Lacroix Fell Down

How the House of Christian Lacroix Fell Down

Photo: Getty Images

The unraveling of Christian Lacroix began long before the label filed for bankruptcy in France in May. Lacroix has clashed with the Falic family, which owns the label, for years. The designer told Hamish Bowles that the Falics, “not being from the couture-and-luxury field ... were not prepared for the long-term investment” in his label. “They thought that in two seasons they would get their money back.” As the Wall Street Journal notes today, couture shows are not staged for the purpose of making money off those clothes. The benefit of a couture show is its worldwide marketing power, which helps sell things like sunglasses and handbags to aspirational and wealthy consumers. Those sales are the meat and potatoes of a fashion house. The money brought in from the actual couture collection is just the gravy — and maybe not even the gravy, but the truffle oil in the gravy — on top.

Tommy Ton, the amazing eye behind Jak & Jil, is in Paris, snapping away street shots of editors, stylists, and more en route to the shows. We have a handful of shots to whet your appetite for now (with more coming later). It's almost like being there, minus all the parties, the vin rouge, and the fabulous dinners.

In Which We Bump Into Daphne Guinness on the Street and Talk Fashion

The subject of this week’s Video Look Book is none other than Daphne Guinness. The Daphne Guinness who vacations with Oscar de la Renta at his house in the Dominican Republic. The Daphne Guinness who possesses one of the most impressive collections of fashion items on the planet. The Daphne Guinness whose clothes make her outshine people like Naomi Campbell. We bumped into her on the street, and she kindly stopped to talk to our video camera about her clothes. She was impossible to miss in her seven-inch heels and tight black dress by L’Wren Scott (whom she calls “my friend L’Wren”). “I thought I was invisible today,” she tells us. “I just put on clothes in the morning and hope for the best. I always think I look so normal.” Watch the video to hear her talk shoes.

Ex-Employees to Sue Scoop and Celebrate With a Rousing Protest

Ex-Employees to Sue Scoop and Celebrate With a Rousing Protest

Photo: Kate Appleton

Over a dozen ex-Scoop employees plan to file suit against the chain in federal court in Manhattan today. The former stock and security workers allege Scoop didn’t pay them overtime. They say the store would promote them to “manager” or “assistant manager” for the sole purpose of replacing their hourly wages with fixed weekly salaries. Meanwhile, they worked 50 to 60 hours a week and did not perform any managerial duties. Labor-law experts say such fake promotions are a common way for employers to get out of overtime pay, which is, by law, time and half. The seventeen ex-employees are demanding $500,000 in lost wages. One spoke to Crain’s:

“We were not really store managers,” Mr. Cisse said. “They just gave us the titles so they could abuse us ... I just want people to know that Scoop is a big company, but what they see is not really the truth.”

When they finish their paperwork today, the ex-workers plan to stage a protest in front of the Scoop store in Soho. On the heels of those bankruptcy rumors, this isn’t shaping up to be a very good year for Scoop. And a protest isn’t going to help them sell those $230 freecity sweatshirts. In fact, just thinking about how gauche those are almost makes us want to demonstrate, too.

Video: Behind the Scenes at Madonna’s Fall 2009 Louis Vuitton Campaign Shoot

As promised, the behind-the-scenes video of Madonna getting her bunny ears on for the fall 2009 Louis Vuitton campaign shoot has surfaced. Marc Jacobs explains he got the idea for the bunny ears one day when he saw a member of his staff, Adrien, tie a piece of fabric around the head of another member of his staff, Lucy. “We were thinking of all these different things like cancan dancers, and I saw this piece of fabric wrapped around Lucy’s head and said, ‘Bunny ears — that’s what we need to finish this look,’” Marc explains. “I like the kind of Playboy, French coquette aspect to it.” Madonna runs around, fawning over Marc, picking out her favorite bags, lamenting her heels, and eating what appear to be chicken skewers. “I’m totally satiated and satisfied,” Marc says. Watch the video to hear him talk about digital photo manipulation!

Jil Sander’s Uniqlo Collection Has a Name!

Jil Sander’s new collection for Uniqlo is one of this fall’s most anticipated. She signed on as creative director in March, her first fashion venture since leaving her eponymous label in 2004. Ever the tease, Uniqlo is slowly rolling out details on her line, like the name: +J. (They couldn’t use “Jil Sander,” since the company that owns Jil Sander retains the rights to it.) Jil Sander will oversee all products sold at Uniqlo, but for now she’s focusing on the new line. A launch date has not been set, but at least we know white shirts — and probably some ironing — will be involved. [WWD]

Best Bet: Sun Saver

After the on-again, off-again bouts of rain, we admit we’ve been a little overzealous about soaking up sun when a rare clear, blue-sky weekend comes along. Unfortunately, long afternoons spent lounging on the roof or in the park have left us with a Monday burn more than once. Beekman 1802’s After-the-Sun soap soothes scorched skin with natural healing ingredients like goat’s milk, green-tea extract, olive oil, lavender, and aloe vera. They’re free of chemicals and artificial fragrances, which can irritate and dry out your already-tender skin. And each box comes packed with ten mini-bars, so it’s easy to throw one in your beach tote or travel bag for sunny weekends away.

$14.95 for ten bars at Green Depot or online.
