Haider Ackermann Headed to Maison Martin Margiela?

Haider Ackermann’s fall 2009 show left critics with a very satisfied and pleasant feeling. Kind of like when you have the perfect sandwich for lunch that’s filling but not too filling. Fashionologie noticed a juicy bit of info in T magazine’s profile of the designer: Apparently, rumors have been circulating for months that Ackermann will take over Maison Martin Margiela. Queried about the rumors, Ackermann would only offer: “When you meet the person you have admired for so many years, how can you possibly replace him? Sometimes it’s better never to meet your heroes.” So they’ve met? Ackermann is able to put a face to the historically faceless house? Rumors have been circulating for months about Margiela’s gradual disconnect from his namesake label. Before the fall 2009 show, he was said to have taken on a consulting role. Earlier this summer he was rumored to have left the house for good, unsatisfied with the direction the label was taking under Diesel, which acquired the brand in 2002.

T reports Ackermann is “open to other possibilities”:

Intriguingly, Ackermann likes the idea of a house with a different sensibility from his. ‘‘You have your own repertoire, to which you are attached, but sometimes you have something else to say, and the code of another house might help you do that,’’ he says. ‘‘I would love to share another aesthetic, but it would have to be the right house. And the right timing.’’

Still, after a quick look at his fall 2009 collection — which is more than worth revisiting — it wouldn’t be hard to see Ackermann at Margiela. Considering that label’s disappointing fall 2009 show, they probably need him.
