Michelle Obama Poses for Glamour Cover, Dispenses Dating Advice

Michelle Obama appears on the cover of the December issue of Glamour. She’s the first First Lady to do so. Editor Cindi Leive writes that the magazine put her on the cover not because she’s a style icon, but because she’s passionate about children and mentoring and empowering young women. Michelle poses inside the magazine with seven White House interns, holding hands with the two luckiest ones. Leive can’t help but gush about how fabulous going to the White House to shoot the First Lady was.

It probably goes without saying that visiting the White House to photograph the First Lady rocks, but come on: visiting the White House to photograph the First Lady rocks … [O]ur team photographed her in the magnificent Diplomatic Room, and to see her striding confidently through those halls, joking with the crew about First Dog Bo’s upcoming birthday and warmly greeting every one of her group of interns, was a thrill.

We are so jealous. But not nearly as jealous as we would have been if Bo had been there to blow out his birthday candle. Michelle doesn’t elaborate on the puppy in the magazine, but she does talk about clothes. She suggests that young women set their own style standards:

“People are always going to have opinions, and people have a right to their opinions, particularly when you’re the First Lady; you’re representing the nation. So I can’t be surprised that people are interested. But I’ve tried to be at peace with the choices that I make first, and then be open to everyone else’s reflection.”

She also gives dating advice! And cautions against going for the “cute” guy.

“Cute’s good. But cute only lasts for so long, and then it’s, Who are you as a person? Don’t look at the bankbook or the title. Look at the heart. Look at the soul … When you’re dating a man, you should always feel good … You shouldn’t be in a relationship with somebody who doesn’t make you completely happy and make you feel whole.”

Because one day you might wake up and see your husband throwing out a pitch in the mom jeans you thought you gave to Goodwill weeks ago.
