French Fashion Photographer Argues Against Proposed Retouching Regulations

Marilyn Monroe, by Richard Avedon.

Marilyn Monroe, by Richard Avedon.

The French legislature is still debating a proposed law that would require retouched photos to be labeled as such. Fashion photographer Jean-Baptiste Mondino, who has also directed music videos for Madonna and Björk, among other artists, says the law would be silly because retouching can also "glorify" women. Indeed, many photographers often use Photoshop to fill in boniness. Mondino wrote recently in French newspaper Libération’s Next magazine:

“The photos of old Hollywood? Retouched! The iconic image of Che Guevara? Retouched! All the photos taken by Richard Avedon of Marilyn Monroe? Retouched! And all of this before today’s software existed, of course. Legs were lengthened using a wide angle; skins were smoothed through overexposure.”

Maybe what the world needs more of, then, are not new laws to protect supposedly fragile women from eating disorders, but better photographers.

Son of Escada Founder Could Bail Out Label for $118.2 Million

The son of Escada's founder is mounting a plan with other investors to bail out the label, which filed for bankruptcy in August. Their offer totals $118.2 million, which is about $18 million more than the cost of bailing out Christian Lacroix. Sven Ley partnered with ex-Gucci head Giacomo Santucci and Italy's Borletti Group on the bid. Under their rescue plan, Santucci would assume the role of chief executive. Four other bidders are still in the running, and a winner could be decided within days. [Reuters]

Model Learns How Not to Use ‘Commotious’ the Hard Way

Model Kendra Spears on embarrassing moments during the spring 2010 season: "Well, during a hurried interview backstage an investigatory journalist asked me what I liked to do when I was at home and I said, 'nothing too commotious.' Afterwards, I realized commotious isn't even a word. I couldn’t stop laughing at myself. " [Editor's Blog/W]

Some of Christian Siriano’s Holiday Collection for Payless Is Now Available

Christian Siriano's new holiday collection of accessories and shoes for Payless just popped up online. This season's lineup includes four new handbag styles, which aren't available yet according to the Payless site. However, the six new shoe styles are already available for purchase, with prices ranging from $29.99 to $49.99. Also included in the collection is a pair of black patent peep-toe boots with a three-and-a-half-inch cone heel. Ironically, at $49.99, they may be the least expensive-looking of the bunch, but everyone defines "fierce" in different ways.

Happy Birthday, Anna Wintour!

Card specially commissioned by artist Christopher Sauvé.

Dearest Anna,

We've had our ups and downs this past year. But as you turn 60 today, you remain a continued source of inspiration! In the past year, you became a movie star, continued your crusade to let women everywhere know it's okay to wear the same thing twice in public, and exhibited fierce — but not too fierce — diva behavior at every chance (at least in restaurants). You're just the kind of diva boss lady we hope to be one day! But also, you weren't afraid to let your hair down every now and then. Oh, and you got Michelle Obama on the cover of Vogue! And in no way is that less special now that she's also been on the covers of Prevention, Glamour, and a bunch of other magazines. Mostly because on your cover, she wasn't wearing a giant waist belt. But this isn't about her — today is your day. Over here we celebrate birthdays with cupcakes and singing and getting irresponsibly drunk after — possibly during — work. And that is why we need a woman like you — who would do none of those things — in our lives.

Please accept this blogcard, which we specially commissioned from artist Christopher Sauvé, just for you. Happy birthday!

xx

Vogue’s Ex-Events Planner Heads to Lincoln Center

Stephanie Winston Wolkoff used to plan the Met Gala as Vogue's director of special events. She left that post in June, and Lincoln Center just scooped her up to help them figure out how on earth to make Fashion Week work when it commences in their backyard instead of Bryant Park for the first time in September 2010. Her experience with "logistically complex" events is just what they need. Hopefully she introduces dramatic floral arrangements and zebra carpeting. Oh, and Starbucks as a coffee sponsor. [FWD]

Michelle Obama Has a Giant New Waist Belt

The First Lady kicked off a mentorship initiative in the White House yesterday with some items of apparel we haven't seen on her before. They included a giant black waist belt with a laser-cut lace pattern, and a very on-trend leopard sequined cardigan (not that on-trend items are always a good thing). See the full look in the Michelle Obama Look Book.

Lady Gaga on Condoms, DVF on Getting Robbed, and Nina Garcia on Stylish Interning

Diane Von Furstenberg

Diane Von FurstenbergPhoto: Patrick McMullan

Lady Gaga arrived two and a half hours late to the ACE Awards presented by the Accessories Council at Cipriani last night. She wouldn't talk to reporters, but explained in her acceptance speech for the Stylemaker award, "I had no gloves and I felt like the outfit needed gloves. So [stylist Nicola Formichetti] and I decided to paint me white. Guess that’s what happens when you don’t have the right accessories."

Meanwhile, Diane Von Furstenberg — who did have the right accessories — explained that she didn't actually get mugged in Madrid, though she had tweeted about being robbed. “I got pickpocketed. No one attacked me,” she said. “I don’t want to give a bad rap to Madrid, but it was annoying, and I had the stupid idea of tweeting it, and then the whole world knew about it.” She's new to Twitter, you see.

Victor Glemaud Digs L.A. Chulo Style for Spring

After two days as a chef-in-training at culinary school, Victor Glemaud realized that fashion, not food, was his ultimate calling. So he dropped out and moved back to New York, where he began working for designer Patrick Robinson. Now, a decade later, Glemaud has become known for his luxurious knits and slightly roughed-up, dapper style. We sat down with Victor to chat about California skater style, wearing white jeans after Labor Day, and a very special pair of Carol Christian Poell trousers.

Rihanna Has a December Glamour Cover, Too

Michelle Obama isn't the only one with a December Glamour cover. She shares that honor with Rihanna, who speaks in the magazine about Chris Brown, that photo, and fashion:

In the first two years of my career, there were a lot of restraints on what I could do. I couldn’t wear certain colors of lipstick, like bright pink, dark pink or red; [my lips] had to be natural. Eventually, I stopped communicating with certain people at the label, and did exactly what I wanted to do. And that was to cut my hair, dye it black, change my clothes, change my sound. Really to just express myself ... My hairdresser just said, “I don’t feel like doing your hair anymore — I want to cut it.” I was like, Finally!

In other words, she became a diva.

Gisele Is Almost Too Pregnant to Fly Helicopters; JCPenney Sued Over Ads

Gisele Bündchen passed the written exam for her pilot's license, and she's going for the practical exam (where she flies a helicopter in the air) next week. She practices flying three times a week while due to give birth to her first child next month with husband Tom Brady. "She's almost to a point where she's too big to be flying," says the owner of the helicopter company where she's taking her lessons. [People]

Lady Gaga Lands M.A.C. Campaign

Lady Gaga Lands M.A.C. Campaign

Photo: Getty Images

Last night, Lady Gaga attended the Accessories Council's annual ACE awards, where Marc Jacobs presented her with the Stylemaker trophy. You can see she earned it last night in her fall clothes: semi-thick tights and a long-sleeved velvet shirt. Naturally, she had a net of lace over her face to either make a scene or ensure she wasn't able to eat or drink anything there (maybe she's a spiller). Ironically, M.A.C. has just named Gaga a face for their AIDS Fund campaign, along with Cyndi Lauper. M.A.C. will make a Viva Glam Gaga Lipstick and a Viva Glam Cyndi Lipstick for $14 each, with all proceeds going to the M.A.C. AIDS Fund. So maybe now that she's the face of a makeup company, she'll have to wear less crazy crap on her head so she can properly shill. The lipstick goes on sale March 18.

Stationery sets usually make for bland gifts, covered with flowery or nondescript patterns. But these gocco-printed packs offer an inexpensive, personal gift for travel-savvy friends. Each comes with a slim Moleskine notebook and four area-code-stamped note cards representing different cities, like Washington, D.C., Seattle, Paris, San Francisco, Chicago, London, New York, and more (plus 718 for die-hard Brooklynites). The lined notebook can serve as a travel journal or an address book, and the note cards are useful for original correspondence or keeping track of far-flung phone numbers. For a couple of dollars less, opt for a five or six-card area-code stationery set on its own, complete with envelopes in cheery hues.

Jet Set Paper stationery sets, $8.50 for journal and four note cards at Etsy.com.
