Though the spring shows hinted at a nineties influence to finally wrest us out of our prolonged eighties obsession, evidence of the latter decade still dominates the racks of most stores. This isn’t the case at Convent, Travis Wayne’s two-week-old boutique on the Lower East Side. The FIT grad and freelance stylist favors an aesthetic he describes as “Blossom and Zach Morris meet Nine Inch Nails,” with washed leather vests and long unisex tees hanging alongside feminine floral prints and ruffles. The tiny 300-square-foot space stocks womenswear, menswear, and accessories, with a focus on designers from places like Australia, Los Angeles, Mexico City, and New York, rather than Milan and Paris. Men’s plaid shirts here are more grunge than hipster-prep, a fitting association considering Wayne describes his ideal client as “Courtney Love, circa 1994.” Click ahead for a look at the stock.
