Bali Label Shakuhachi Lands at Urban Outfitters

Self-taught designer Jessie White unceremoniously launched her Shakuhachi label a decade ago, when she presented a handmade collection of neon printed T-shirts to a boutique in Australia; it was bought up on the spot. In the cutthroat fashion world, this Aussie designer is something of an anomaly, living in Bali and slowly expanding her brand. Gleaning inspiration from original artwork and classic cult films, White’s wide-ranging collections offer a study in contrasts: A primly embellished cropped jacket is paired with a shredded racer-back tank; cocktail dresses sport funky twists and asymmetrical necklines; and loungey basics are luxuriously re-created in distressed leather. She experiments with new washes and textures each season, from shaggy vests and suede culottes to crocheted leather tees.

This month, Shakuhachi will be featured in Urban Outfitters’ high-end capsule shop (look for it at the Soho and Union Square locations), and the fall collection will be stocked at Blue & Cream and Pixie Market. Click ahead to check out more looks from her fall line.
