Kate Middleton and Prince William Set a Date

Kate Middleton and Prince William’s royal wedding will occur on April 29 — a Friday! — at Westminster Abbey in London. This “semi-state affair” will be paid for privately, including Kate’s gown, of course. It’s still unclear who’s designing that wedding dress to end all wedding dresses, but according to British Vogue, British designer Amanda Wakely is the “favourite to design it at 4/1.” The Today show, which has been delivering delightful reports daily on the latest breaking developments in speculation surrounding the nuptials, reports the wedding could cost $40 million, and that Kate’s dress alone could cost around $200,000. Also, the dress is not expected to look anything like Diana’s, which could easily just make everyone feel awkward.

An additional $20 million is expected to be spent on security, footed by the taxpayers. Kate and William are reportedly worried about not looking too ostentatious in tough economic times, though thousands of people, including fellow European royals, will witness the ceremony in the church. And celebrities in attendance are expected to include Elton John and Phil Collins. However, as one commenter noted, they already saved money by not buying a new ring. Anyway, the whole point and thrill of this thing is that it is so ostentatious. They can’t not roll up in a carriage and do similarly fancy things.
