Some intelligence surrounding the epic union of Kate Middleton and Prince William has the bride wearing a dress by a "little-known" designer. This would refute the widespread belief in the betting community that Kate has chosen favorite royal designer Bruce Oldfield — who dressed Princess Diana quite often — to make her wedding gown. Now that Kate Middleton's mom, Carole, and sister Pippa were spotted spending more than an hour and a half at Oldfield's shop with Oldfield himself, either all bets are off — or on.
The British tabloids seem sure the visit means Kate will wear Oldfield for her wedding, but really, nothing is certain. Pippa and Carole might be having some dresses made for themselves for the million and one wedding events they'll have to attend on and leading up to the big day. Sources close to the situation believe that Kate, who is lying low, is sending them around town as her wedding-dress emissaries to "help with the research and planning." But who would really want their mom, even with a sister as a buffer, to overlord the making of one of the world's most important dresses? The Daily Mail reports Kate recently narrowed her choices down to two gowns, one of which was by a relatively unknown designer. So sure, she probably felt obligated to consider Bruce Oldfield, and well-connected people in the fashion world believe he is The One, but perhaps he's not, and her mom and sister just went to visit him because he was having a sale, and they're important enough to shop with him personally.
And maybe they bought their wedding outfits on sale! It would be in the spirit of the wedding, for which Kate and William have asked guests to make charitable donations in lieu of gifts, since china really must be the last thing they need. The Daily Mail reports, the efforts not to appear elitist and royal don't stop there:
And they are determined to make their nuptials the first ‘people’s royal wedding’ by including the poor and downtrodden in their celebrations, possibly inviting wounded servicemen, former drug addicts and children to the ceremony.
Screw the Middletons; we want to know what the former drug addicts will wear. High fashion designers love those.
Update: Since news of Pippa and Carole's visit went global, the Bruce Oldfield store has been besieged by press. "It's mayhem," an Oldfield spokesperson tells the Telegraph. "Every time a customer arrives at the shop, they all try and swarm inside, pushing in through the door with her. Their bravado is astounding. We've had press inquiries ever since the engagement was announced, but now it's gone completely global." Ha, just imagine what will happen to whoever she wears after the wedding. Wu-hoo, you know.
