Marc Jacobs Has Been Struggling With His CFDA Awards Acceptance Speech

Tonight, Marc Jacobs heads to the CFDA Awards to accept the honorary Lifetime Achievement prize from his muse, Sofia Coppola. Yesterday, he was busy co-hosting the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic, a boozy, all-day affair on Governors Island, where, he told us, he was somewhat prepared for the evening. His outfit? “A tuxedo I had made many years ago from Huntsman,” he said. “It’s the same tuxedo I always wear. I have not worn a different one for years. I think it took about five fittings to get it right, and so it’s just my tuxedo.” And is the speech ready? “I have to write it still,” he told us. “I’ve been struggling with writing it, to be honest. I’m not a good writer at all. Anytime anyone’s ever asked me to write something, what I do is, I write notes and thoughts, and they build up and over a week I kind of edit through those thoughts. And then I try to put them in some order and then I reread it. Then I run it by somebody. Then I rewrite it. So it’s kind of a process that has to happen over a course of days, and I think when the pressure is there, that’s when it’ll come. So tonight and tomorrow I’ll get it together.”
