John Waters on Amy Winehouse: ‘It’s Hard to Look That Cheap and Pull It Off’
On the Monday following Amy Winehouses's death, WWD wrote the singer "was never going to be an enduring inspiration to the world of fashion." Her influence might not extend to the runways, and she didn't inspire everyone attribute new looks to her, the way any new crazy piece of fashion seems to make critics think "Lady Gaga." But the Times notes today, she managed to achieve three very difficult things with the look she debuted with her Back to Black album and that stayed with her until her death. One:
“It's hard to look that cheap and pull it off,” John Waters said admiringly of Amy Winehouse, some days after the English singer was found dead in her London bed.
And two:
It was Ms. Winehouse alone, though, who could pull off feats of vocal and sartorial brilliance without sounding like a karaoke singer or looking as if she were in drag.
And lastly:
According to Mr. Waters, anybody else trying to pull off Ms. Winehouse’s look was doomed to failure. “It all looked like it came very naturally to her,” he said. “She didn’t look like Halloween, but you could go as her on Halloween, and there’s the difference.”
Winehouse's look from her first album Frank was much more plain compared to what she did when Back to Black came out. Apparently, no matter how thrown-together her outfits looked, every bit of them was calculated.
