There are very few celebrities who are capable of taking a scrum of cranky, tired reporters and photographers and charming them all in the span of about three minutes, but Michael Douglas is one of them, and that’s exactly what he did at the Michael Kors show on Wednesday morning. The instant he walked into the Tent — looking healthy and well in jeans and a black leather jacket — Douglas was swarmed by the press, and in the very next instant, everyone was delightedly chortling. The man has charisma. He also said that his motto is “be nice to strangers,” so clearly he practices what he preaches.
Douglas was traveling solo, with only his chin cleft for company — C.Z.J. couldn’t make it — and told the assembled crowd that he came out because, “I love the guy. He doesn’t take it too seriously.” We assume “the guy” in question is Kors himself, but maybe Douglas was just being nice to strangers again and actually decided to make the trek because he felt like the dude in B-5-15 needed the support.
Rounding out the front row were Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, who walks more slowly than any celebrity we’ve ever seen, and a gray-clad Zoe Saldana, who is truly stunning in person. We wanted to ask her if being at Lincoln Center brought back sweet memories of filming Center Stage, but decided to hold our tongues. While we cherish that movie, she may feel differently, and apparently it is Be Nice to Strangers Day. And the last thing we want to do is disappoint Michael Douglas.
