Yves Saint Laurent and parent company PPR have now confirmed yesterday’s reports that Hedi Slimane will succeed Stefano Pilati as the house’s creative director. Slimane previously served as the designer of YSL Rive Gauche Pour Homme from 1997 to 2000 before heading to Dior Homme, where he worked until 2007. He spent the past four years living in L.A. and working on his photography career. Although Slimane has never designed a womenswear collection before, he dressed female celebrities like Madonna and Nicole Kidman during his tenure at Dior.
According to a statement from YSL, Slimane now has “total creative responsibility for the brand image and all of its collections,” and officials are gushing about the label’s fresh start. YSL CEO Paul Deneve said he looks forward to “a promising new chapter in the story of the maison,” while PPR chief Francois-Henri Pinault said the “formidable potential” of YSL “will be successfully harnessed and revealed through the vision of Hedi Slimane.” Slimane is expected to present his first collection during resort season.
