Less than a week after Seventeen editor Ann Shoket announced the magazine’s new “Body Peace Treaty,” which, among other promises, pledges to “never change girls’ body or face shapes,” Teen Vogue faces mounting pressure to make the same commitment. Back in May, 14-year-old Julia Bluhm and several other members of the SPARK movement (a group dedicated to ending the sexualization of women and girls in media) protested against Seventeen’s Photoshopping practices outside the Hearst Tower; tomorrow SPARK activists will demonstrate outside the Condé Nast building, according to Buzzfeed Shift. This isn’t much of a surprise — SPARK cohorts Carina Cruz and Emma Stydahar started an online petition against airbrushing in Teen Vogue just a week ago, fueled by the attention garnered by Seventeen’s new “treaty.” As of this afternoon, they’d gained 26,021 signatures. Needless to say, Amy Astley is probably working on a response this very minute.
