Judging the Attire at the White House Correspondents' Dinner

Photo: Getty Images

A lot of actors (Colin Firth), reality stars (Lauren Conrad), and famous people we thought had fallen by the wayside (Jenny McCarthy) attended the White House Correspondents' dinner. It was an odd mix of guests, who for the most part looked fairly decent. After all, they couldn't bust out their "Look at me! I'm a fashion risk-taker!" looks for dinner with a bunch of politicians.

Let's commence dress judgment with one of the most-talked-about guests of the night, Heidi Montag. Props to her on the shoes. The dress looks nice, too. The bag, we could do without. But Heidi really needs to learn to stand up straight. In every photo she looks like she has no neck, and that is most definitely not what Tyra taught us on America's Next Top Model. Also, it wouldn't kill her to give a happy smile rather than an "I'm sorry I'm so famous — but not really" face.

Spring's Floral Frocks Are Really Quite Garish

They really could not look less thrilled.Photo: WENN

Last night, Posh and Becks celebrated their birthdays together with a joint party, which is kinda, sorta cute, we guess. What's not kinda, sorta cute is Victoria's dress. We appreciate that the Beckhams are the kind of couple who coordinate their attire, but we don't appreciate those random black flowers on Posh that look like they've been sponged on. The dress is way too old for her (though we confess we are amazed at how she uses cleavage to trick us into thinking it's actually too young for her). Anyhoo, since florals are so unoriginally the hot trend this spring, we'll all have to get used to far more garish dresses than this one. After the jump, we've compiled images of some recently worn offensive floral frocks.

How Not to Pose for Photos, Courtesy of Celebrities

Photo: Getty Images

A reader e-mails the Guardian's Hadley Freeman to ask how a person should pose in a photo — excellent question. Freeman replies that celebrities themselves are often very bad at posing (think Posh Spice), so we shouldn't take tips from them. You'd think that, given a life on the red carpet, celebs would be a bit better at this, but the Hollywood philosophy, says Freeman, is to look like they've been caught off guard so that no matter what, people can say, "Oh, she just looks like a dying fish because she was caught unaware." One Hollywood trick to achieving this look is to say "prune" when the cameras flash. Freeman suspects this is why Renée Zellweger always looks like she's trying not to smile or open her eyes too widely in her photos, as you see above. The effect isn't too flattering. After the jump we take a look at a few more famous gals in need of some new camera tricks.

Ever Since Lagerfeld Put a Parrot on the Runway, Designers Have Loved Stunts

The set of the spring 2008 Chanel couture show.Photo:

W magazine says a "Plain Jane" runway show — one with a white backdrop and no stunts or special sets — is like a tree falling in the forest that no one hears. And we all know the tree no one hears fall is so not the fabulous tree. So obviously when designers fall in the forest — er, stage runway shows — they want everyone to notice. This is why they concoct zany stunts for their special events, like having Sonic Youth play during a fashion show (Marc Jacobs), or entering a fragrance launch party in a faux airplane (John Galliano). Karl Lagerfeld was one of the first designers to incorporate such flair into his functions; the set for his first Chloé show in 1974 re-created a trellis garden at the Palais de Congres in Paris, and he sent one model out holding a green parrot. Oh, Karl. What a moment. In case you missed any of it, here are some of the stunts that the fashion greats have cooked up to get your attention:

Karl Lagerfeld
• The set for a recent Chanel ready-to-wear show was a winding carousel in the Grand Palais that weighed ten tons, took five weeks to carve, and five days to install. (Remember these shows last fifteen minutes. A long fifteen minutes, but still.)
• The Fendi party at Paris Fashion Week included an intimate performance by the "notoriously unreliable" Amy Winehouse when she first developed that rash thing no less.

And then there's the "Diorient Express." »

Socialites Don Their Spring Dresses, We Judge Them

Denise RichPhoto: Patrick McMullan

Oh, spring! We never thought you'd come — until today, that is, when we experienced your delightful, sweat-inspiring heat. We've been kicking about in our booties, tights, and sweaters until now, but it seems the socialites are way ahead of us (they do travel in toasty black cars after all). Checking out photos from last night's parties, we noticed the outfits were as spring-ready as the sandals — sandals! — on our feet right now. As they have precious little time to flaunt their spring threads before they're off to the Hamptons, let's judge their printed, lightweight garb while we can!

At left we have socialite mother hen, Denise Rich. We don't even know where to begin. The abstract yellow cowprint? The textured shiny leather element? The gingerbread tan? Highlighted by the too light makeup creeping over her whole face? Spring is light, yes, but not like this.

Dressing for a Book Party at the Waverly

Yesterday, a bunch of fancy publishing types gathered at the Waverly Inn to celebrate a new book by Sheila Weller called Girls Like Us: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon — And the Journey of a Generation. As interested as we are in the lives of those three women, at the moment we're more interested in what people wear to book parties at the Waverly. Apparently, it involves a lot of animal print. Let's commence judgment with Vanity Fair editor Amy Fine Collins (left) and Carly Simon.

The snakeskin kimono top just wasn't enough for you Collins, was it? You just had to throw the bag in there, and now our eyes hurt from the overload — we've been staring at this screen all day, and you just couldn't be gentle, could you? Meanwhile, Carly Simon just looks freaking cool. Love what she's doing with that belt. Photo: Patrick McMullan

Demi Moore Gets Frayed, Olivia Palermo Gets Frisky

On Monday night, a bunch of fashion-y folk gathered to watch Flawless and then celebrate it with a party in the Soho Grand penthouse. Some pretty funny photos of famous people emerged, which we will now judge. Along with their outfits, of course.

This is Demi Moore with some frayed seams on her coat. We guess she was going for a cowgirl look with that belt and all. She glommed on to Donna Karan, as would we because Karan is freaking awesome. On the right she's with her youngest daughter, Tallulah. Yeah, we wore fur coats when we were 13, too.Photo: Patrick McMullan

The Best- and Worst-Dressed Real Housewives of New York

The rich and tacky bandy about in our very own city! On camera!Photo: Getty Images

The shopping habits, outfit choices, hair and makeup styling, and sick emphasis on their daughters' outward appearances have been consistently appalling on the Real Housewives of Orange County. Alas, on this joyous eve, we will see the New York equivalent when the Real Housewives of New York premieres. Last night the New York Wives gathered at Touch nightclub for a little screening party, offering us a glimpse of what they think style is. Do we agree? We'll tell you after the jump, where we rank them from best to worst dressed. Because at the Cut, we do everything we can to breed even more competition amongst these people.

Victoria Beckham Launches Frock Line

The Peak of Tacky.Photo: Getty Images

She's already got a denim line, but Victoria Beckham's design ambitions don't stop there. As soon as she's done with the Spice Girls reunion tour, Posh is set to do line of "POSH frocks." According to The People, she's in talks to sell her signature dress collection at upscale department stores and wants her line to be more expensive than Kate Moss's and Lily Allen's (oooh, competitive).

Beckham has "picked up knowledge" from Roberto Cavalli and supposedly sought advice from pal Marc Jacobs. Though we normally roll our eyes when celebrities start clothing lines, we are veritably pumped about this one. What's wrong with having a little hope? After all, Beckham has come a long way from the infamous zebra dress we like to remember as the Peak of Tacky. After the jump, we take a look at some of our favorite Spice Girl's recent outfits for an indication of what we hope to see on the racks sometime soon. And homegirl isn't as bad as you'd think.

Monday-Morning Quarterbacking: Oscars Edition!

From left, Ryan Seacrest and Collin Farrell might be able to "smolder," but it didn't help their outfits.Photos: AP, Getty Images

The annual parade of gowns down the Oscars' red carpet last night was a big-time bore; no one looked absolutely dazzling. And no one looked absolutely dreadful, unless you count Ryan Seacrest. Though there was also Colin Farrell … But we digress! We don't understand why more stars don't wear fashionable things to the Oscars. This year's numerous solid-colored silk gowns harkened back to prom, per usual, but thank God for Marion Cotillard, who at least livened things up a little bit. The Guardian called her Jean Paul Gaultier fish gown "creepy," while the Telegraph called it a "winner." Finally, controversy! The postshow fashion analysis, along with our own takeaway, after the jump.

It's time for House of Hefty, Jennifer Hudson's breasts, and sea anemones! »
