Cannes Day 3: Marion Cotillard, Eva Longoria, and an Extraordinary Dress Made of Biscuit Trays

The last 24 hours at Cannes have been remarkably eventful! First there was the post-Bling Ring jewelry theft, then a crazy gun-wielding man, followed by a lady wearing an enormous dress made of old biscuit packages (dark chocolate McVities, hopefully) to a screening of The Past. To compare, last year's Cannes was so tame that a snail made news.

Of course, despite all the hoopla, celebrities carried on wearing splendid gowns to fancy parties. Today brought some new faces, namely a goddess-like Doutzen Kroes in Atelier Versace, Samantha Barks in Chrisian Dior, and Eva Longoria in Zuhair Murad. Meanwhile, Marion Cotillard took a rare turn in stripey Vivienne Westwood, and Robin Wright looked cooler than everyone else combined with her simple white tank and pressed pants. Click through our slideshow to see all the big names from Cannes' most excitement-filled day so far.

Captain Kirk) do everything from leap off a cliff, wear a mock-neck, and hurtle through space in the action-packed movie, we suggest you watch Ellen try to make the leading blue-eyed, blonde-haired man cry. It turns out Pine is both single and sensitive. Things that have once made him shed a tear: Up, The Notebook, Warhorse, and "sad songs." He's also on the hunt for a woman with "intelligence, beauty, and a sense of humor." If you've fallen under the spell of his well-groomed beard, softie heart, and rumbling chuckle, you can now call yourself a "Pine Nut." That's what his groupies allegedly call themselves. (Also, he attends fashion shows! See photo above.)

Although his publicist said nothing's on the books "at this time," perhaps arrangements are just in the early stages. WWD had an inkling the interviewer might be Charlie Rose, who has hosted fashion people like Anna Wintour, Tom Ford, and Marc Jacobs, but Rose's executive producer said nothing had been scheduled — yet.

First Looks: J.Crew’s CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Collection

It's generally a win-win situation for everyone: The designers get national exposure from a huge retailer, customers get access to cool labels at more affordable prices, and J.Crew gets exclusive, fashion-forward merchandise. While past results have been mixed (many items from the 2012 range wound up on clearance after a few months), this year's offerings are particularly good, especially Tabitha Simmons's adorable Liberty-print sandals and Jennifer Meyer's dangly crystal earrings. Click ahead to see the full collection, including Simmons's shoes, Meyer's jewelry, and soft, candy-colored cashmere by the Elder Statesman. Prices haven't been released yet, but the items hit J.Crew's website on Wednesday, May 22.

Cannes: Rooney Mara, Nicole Kidman, and a Very Wet Red Carpet

"This weather, what the fuck?" That was Rooney Mara's jovial and very appropriate greeting to Harvey Weinstein at Thursday night’s annual IFP- and Calvin Klein–sponsored celebration of Women in Film, usually one of the most reliably fun nights at the Cannes Film Festival. The combination of body-fat-deficient actresses in slinky, sleeveless Calvin Klein dresses plus a monsoonlike storm driving rain directly onto the ocean-side red carpet made for a stunningly miserable affair (that is, until everyone got inside the heated tent and got a lot of Champagne into their bellies). Goosebumps covered honoree Carey Mulligan in a tight strapless black dress as she rehashed Gatsby yet again, this time for the foreign press corps, and talked about which women in film she wants to work with: Marion Cotillard and Nicole Kidman (who followed her down the red carpet; let's hope the two struck a deal inside).

Kidman is replacing Vulture MVP Diane Kruger this year as the most glamorous member of the Cannes main competition jury. (Ziyi Zhang has those honors on the jury for Un Certain Regard competition, of which Sofia Coppola's Bling Ring was the opening film.) Kidman says she is "bound by strict rules" not to talk much about being a juror and could only tell reporters that watching so many movies was simply "glorious; I'm in heaven." Come on, no dish about taking espresso and macaroons with fellow jurors Steven Spielberg and Ang Lee during downtime? Kidman actually burst out laughing. "There is no downtime! Just watching movies," she shouted, before the rain hustled her inside as well.

Mara, too, barely withstood the deluge drenching her peach-colored dress; she tossed off a few boilerplate quotes about being proud of females in Hollywood while she was shielded on all sides by burly French umbrella holders. The only one of the night's honorees who seemed to be made of truly stronger stuff was British Bond Girl Naomie Harris, who took her pelting by wind and rain with good humor. (The night's final honoree, Kidman's fellow jury member and director Lynne Ramsay, either got swept away by the storm entirely, or revenge-kidnapped by someone involved with Jane Got a Gun.) Harris had packed completely wrong and had nothing warm or practical to wear, but, "You just brave it out. I mean, it's Cannes!" she said, waving off the offer of a coat that didn't quite match the look and would've hidden her dress's side cutouts. Besides, "I didn't bring my Wellington boots. They wouldn't go with this dress."

Meanwhile, Calvin Klein designer Francisco Costa rushed around, happily taking iPhone pictures of his pretty creations getting soaked and ruined. "At least we're not the only party having bad weather," he said. "So it's all good." As for the dresses, none of the actresses would be able to return without serious dry cleaning. Costa shrugged, "That's life. Roses die, the perennials of the season; dresses disappear, too. I have no problem with that. There's always better dresses coming."

Knowing that the event is filled with one red-carpet event after the other, she probably came prepared with an extensive wardrobe. But what's really impressive are all of the accoutrements her hairstylist had to bring in order to seemingly change-up the star's 'do for almost every appearance in France. It's only been three days and so far she's worn her hair in a stylized pixie, a pulled-back chignon, and a sleek updo. Let's take a look at how one short haircut may look deceivingly like it grew out long overnight.

Appearance No. 1: May 15

This is her current haircut: the pixie. One of two things could be happening here. She's either due in for a trim (the temple area and forelock are a bit too long) or she's in the midst of growing out her hair. Either way, she clearly has a very cropped cut.

Appearance No. 2: May 16

There's a more defined part with this look, which the hairstylist probably did to create those loose, face-framing tendrils. The rest of the hair, specifically around the crown, appears to have been blown-out and puffed up to possibly hide a clip-in hairpiece. Similar to this version by Daisy Fuentes's extensive hairpiece collection with LuxHair, it's essentially a barrette with a mini-cascade of hair tumbling off it. Presto: Instant updo!

Appearance No. 3: May 16 (evening)

This is the work of a Bumpit or one of these hair doughnuts often used during Fashion Week, on editorial sets, or by Dallas women to create mega-volume at the crown. The rest of her pixie appears to have been combed back and carefully hairsprayed or moussed up to create this aerodynamic shape.

Brava, you mystery hairstylist. We can't wait to see what other tricks you have up your sleeve.

We pay less, we buy more, but we have too much stuff, and our own economy and creativity seems stilted, if not stagnant. These days, our approach to buying for our closets should be conscientious: a strategy that demands quality, crafstmanship, and creativity in addition to that joy that comes from wearing something excellent. One catch-all solution: Buy American. So in this second installment of our "Made in America" series, we looked for simple basics that are the best in their category. From the unusual (a Jasmin Shokrian white-cotton sundress) to the classic (Levi's nubbly gray sweatshirt), click ahead to see eighteen new feel-good options.

News that Beyoncé is indeed pregnant! The announcement follows weeks of rumors that began with her awkwardly belted Met Gala dress and gained momentum when she canceled a performance in Antwerp, Belgium, on Tuesday, owing to "dehydration and exhaustion" (ahem, morning sickness). Meanwhile, her PR team has forbidden photographers from taking pictures at her shows, spawning gossip that hi-res images would reveal her growing tummy. Although Team Bey STILL has not confirmed, go ahead and fire up the
color + plant baby-name generator.

Fake the Bake With Twelve New Self-Tanners

If you live anywhere in the cold Northeast (or are smart and like to practice sun safety), then chances are your appendages are not ready to see the light of day. While makeup makes it easy to get your bronze on from the neck up, it's harder to fake a full-body tan unless you slather yourself in some DHA (the most common of tanning agents).

Previously, we've introduced you to the self-tanning body wash, the Kardashian tanning collection, and spray-tanned Gwyneth Paltrow abs. But there are still many more products out there, built to get you tan without having to actually bask in the sun. Click through the slideshow to see a range of self-tanners for face and body and every faux-tan need. Just don't forget to exfoliate before applying all self-tanners for streak-free, non-patchy tans.

Rooney Mara Finally Lands a Major Fashion Contract

The courtship between an actress and a major fashion label, now almost a rite of passage for starlets, is a long and complex process. For Rooney Mara and Calvin Klein, it's quite possible they've been flirting with each other for over a year; she's been wearing designer Francisco Costa's outfits on red carpets since late 2011, and his fashion show is one of the only ones she's ever attended. But at long last, now it's official: She is the new face of Calvin Klein's "Downtown" fragrance, which comes out this July.

The announcement comes on the heels of Mara's co-chairmanship of this year's Met Gala, which brought her a fair share of publicity (including a second Vogue cover). This summer, she'll make the rounds for Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, her new movie with Casey Affleck, which will give her plenty of opportunities to wear Calvin on red carpets.

So what kind of consumer is Mara supposed to resonate with? Coty SVP Catherine Walsh tells WWD that "Downtown" will be marketed to women ages 25 to 35 who "see downtown as a place they want to be" and "identify it with youthfulness, edginess and cool." In ad form, this translates to Mara leaning against a brick building in a black leather jacket, her eyes rimmed with smokey liner and her hair slicked back. There will also be a set of TV commercials directed by Dragon Tattoo's David Fincher. A package deal! Can they fit Daniel Craig in somewhere, too, please?

Michelle Obama Has Retired Her Bangs

Today the first lady revealed a new look for her commencement speech at Bowie State University in Maryland: Side-swept bangs. Gone are the blunt midlife crisis bangs she debuted in February, leaving behind only a poofy, angled trace of the controversial fringe action. Michelle weathered the most difficult part of the bangs aftermath well — though she admitted they were "irritating," she never dealt with the clips and headbands mess many parents use on their kids to get them through the unflattering growing-out period.

But, why now? Is she over the look? Does she know that instead of providing shade, bangs are inviting sweat to cover a forehead during a D.C. summer? Is she looking for a new thing now that everyone, including her husband, is trying the trend? Or is she simply trying to send a message to the graduating class that everyone makes mistakes, but there's always time for a fresh start. Even if your mistake will be remembered for all time.

Jean Paul Gaultier Explains the Eurovision Song Contest

Depending upon whom you ask, the Eurovision Song Contest is either an unbearable kaleidoscope of sequins, camp-as-you-like dance routines, and nonsense lyrics; or, for precisely these reasons, the single best Saturday of the year. Not familiar with this europop spectacular? Simply put, Eurovision is an annual competition in which each member country of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) submits a song to be performed on live television. Each country then casts votes for the other countries' songs in a process that involves public telephone votes and professional juries. Confusingly, EBU countries include those that are not technically part of Europe, which means that places like Russia and Azerbaijan are in the mix. Its debut was in 1956, conceived as a way of uniting war-torn Europe. Since then it has introduced (or inflicted the world with) acts like Abba, Julio Iglesias, and Celine Dion, evolving into a kind of X Factor–on-steroids shindig with baffling costumes, catchy songs, and an insatiable appetite for pyrotechnics.

Whoever wins has the honor of hosting the next contest, and this Saturday, the task falls to last year’s winners, Sweden, who will be staging the grand finale in the city of Malmö. It promises to possess the ingredients for a perfect Eurovision final: Armenia’s song was penned by Black Sabbath; the U.K. is tactically deploying eighties soft-rock belter Bonnie Tyler; Greece’s kilt-wearing act sings about free alcohol; and Ukraine’s contribution features a dumbstruck medieval giant.

Then there’s the politics. Despite the well-meaning intentions of the Eurovision founders, this is the place where age-old allegiances and grudges can rear their glitter-encrusted heads. While a finely crafted tune will still receive the maximum 12 points, there is a tendency for neighbouring countries to vote for each other, while the UK’s zero points total in 2003 was interpreted by many as backlash against its involvement in the Iraq war. (Although this could be a convenient misreading of the fact that the UK’s 2003 entry just wasn’t very good.) In 1998, transsexual artist Dana International was chosen to represent Israel with her song "Diva," and received a torrent of opposition from conservative groups in her own country who attempted to void her participation. But Eurovision Song Contest viewers embraced her performance and she went on to take first place. This year will see Finland’s entrants incorporate a lesbian wedding kiss in their act, and it will be interesting to see who’ll hand ‘nul points’ to Germany thanks to Angela Merkel’s fiscal whip-cracking.

At the center of all this is Jean Paul Gaultier, who is dressing the host of the competition, a woman named Petra Mede (above left). A self-confessed Eurovision obsessive, Gaultier loved the competition so much that he wanted to get involved, and since 1991, he’s dressed several of France’s entrants as well as the aforementioned Dana International. We asked him explain his to explain the extravaganza of politics and spandex to Americans, who will have to resort to streaming the contest online.

How would you describe Eurovision to someone who has never seen it before and assumes that everything European is chic and cosmopolitan?
An eruption! It shows different cultures around Europe, but it’s also amazingly kitsch and fun. It’s hilarious, non?

When did you get into the gloriousness that is Eurovision?
When I was a child, which was a long time ago because now I am an old man. I started watching it at the end of the fifties with my whole family. It was a great time for Eurovision in France because we were always winning! Even people like Serge Gainsbourg got involved in the sixties. They were big hits — of course, you don’t get that now, and that makes me sad. It was so joyful and fun that I couldn’t help but get hooked. I started watching it with my friends in Paris. Now I’m obsessed. When I heard that there was a stage show about Eurovision in London [entitled Eurobeat the Musical, tragically now closed], of course I had to come over from Paris to see it.

How did you start getting involved with designing outfits for the shows?
I loved it so much that I just wanted to participate. Not by singing — that wouldn’t be fair on anyone — but by doing the costumes. Amina [whom Jean Paul dressed for the contest in 1991] almost won. That was sad; I still remember all the points. She got the same total as the winner, but not the same amount of [perfect scores, which serve as a tiebreaker.]

And then you dressed Dana International twice. She has caused her fair share of Eurovision controversy.
Dana International was a fabulous experience. People didn’t want her to represent Israel, but it was the first time that the public could vote and she won. [Editor's note: 1998 was the first year that viewers could vote by telephone; points were awarded by juries of music professionals prior to that.] I was so happy. She is such an amazing diva and she knew how to do visual spectacle, which is essential to great Eurovision.

What makes excellent Eurovision fashion?
It has to be spectacular, distinctive, over-the-top — it’s a big show, so this is not the time for minimalism or restraint. Fun is the most important thing when it comes to Eurovision. To be honest, it’s not about the clothes, it’s about an overall look. The best acts are the ones that walk on and make you say “NO WAY.” Like the group who dressed as monsters [Lordi, Finland’s winning entry in 2006]. They were amazing. I once did fashion commentary for the Eurovision final on French TV, but it was difficult because I couldn’t really say what I thought. I wanted to be quite polite, but you know, it was hard because there were some women there who looked like Donatella Versace.

Who are you rooting for this year?
This year I really want Bonnie Tyler to win. I love her; when I heard she was participating, I was like, oh my God, that is fantastic! I hope she wears extravagant clothes. I should have asked to dress her, that would have been great. That is my only Eurovision regret. But this year I’m dressing the presenter, so I couldn’t. Another time …

What do you make of France’s effort this year?
Armandine? She is from that pop idol academy thing … I think she is okay, but I think we could have something more extreme, bigger and better. I don’t know. I’ve been watching it for years and years and years, and I love it when it’s something different, like when Patricia Kaas performed for us, even though she was a big star. There’s a bit of a snobbish attitude towards Eurovision in France.

What’s it like chez Gaultier on Eurovision final night?
If I’m at home, I invite around some old friends and we vote as if we’re the jury. We don’t take it as seriously as we used to because whatever we think, Belarus or somewhere will win because of the voting politics. It’s better to rate them on kitschiness and how much we love them.

Do you think that the competition gets hijacked by the politics?
The voting has changed and that’s a good thing. Before it was only the people in the North of Europe who could vote; now Serbia, Ukraine, and Russia all vote for each other, and France, Ireland, and England do the same. What I find strange is that countries that have been at war tend to vote for each other. They like to show they forgive and forget. Like Serbia and Croatia, for example; they fight, but they are friends on the Eurovision stage. In some ways, you could say Eurovision is about peace — maybe a big Eurovision show is the answer to world peace.

Despite the “Euro” prefix, eligibility to enter Eurovision is not restricted to countries within Europe. Given these hazy rules, are there any American acts that could do the competition justice?
Fabulous and American? That’s easy: Liberace. It should be funny, don’t you think? I also think that Björk should represent Iceland. I’d love that.

As a connoisseur of all things Eurovision, can you describe the ingredients for the perfect Eurovision act?
It has to be a spectacular, with a great voice and a big theatrical performance. Most of all, it needs to be funny. Those are the best things — the only things, in fact. Or something unique that is very symbolic of the country. Beautiful can be difficult to find in Eurovision ... I tend to prefer the funny, funky songs; for me, that is Eurovision. Or when Turkey did opera in the eighties. That was superb.

What’s your advice for a Eurovision virgin preparing to watch for the first time?
Take an aspirin, put in earplugs, and be ready to change the TV channel. No, I joke! Just go with it and enjoy it. There’s so much energy that it is addictive. Just make sure you have an open mind and you’ll see that it’s fabulous.
