Magazine Editors (and Tina Brown!) Issue Shocking Miley Verdicts

Clockwise from top left: Jim Nelson, Katrina Vanden Heuvel, David Remnick, and Tina BrownPhoto: Patrick McMullan, vanityfair.com

Could there be a more fitting crowd with which to discuss Miley Cyrus's Vanity Fair picture than those who attended American Society of Magazine Editors' awards ceremony last night? We hit up the biggest honchos in the room to get their opinions on the brouhaha, and guess what they had to say?

Former Vanity Fair editor Tina Brown: "I just thought, 'There Annie [Liebovitz] goes again! Driving up sales!'" she said. "I saw her here tonight and I congratulated her. I said, 'Great job. Now just put one of those out every quarter.' It's terrific for newsstand and it gets Si [Newhouse] off your back."

Elle editor Robbie Myers: "She's a million dollar industry. She sells out crowds all over the world. She's a huge international star. She has blue jeans on and a sheet. Really? There was never a point when Vanity Fair wasn't fine with those photos. We know they were fine with it because they published it."

Tinsley Mortimer Explains the Japanese Handbag Market

Glossy!Photo: Patrick McMullan

Last night we bumped into Tinsley Mortimer, sipping cocktails at the opening party for the new Vertu cell phone boutique in the recently refurbished Plaza Hotel. So we put our glossiest smiles on, approached, and introduced ourselves. "It's funny, when you speak with New York you never know which way they are going to go," she said, backing away. Well, on our honor, Mrs. Mortimer! "They sorta walk that middle road where you don't know if your interview is going to go good or bad." We assured her we'd be nice, but she didn't seem convinced. "When someone is outright nasty to you that hurts," she explained. "I really try not to have a negative outlook. I mean, I'm not going to say I'm not disappointed when I read something bad about myself."

Our Very Own Moment with Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt

Speidi!Photo: WireImage

Dear Readers:

We would like you to know we can now die knowing we lived a full and vibrant life. Why, you may ask? Well, we're pleased to present you with two of the most coveted of all interviews, ever. Yes, we're talking about Hills power couple Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt. They positively radiated fame and success at the premiere party for Harold at 1 Oak last night and we were lucky enough to bask in their glorious glory. Just when we thought standing next to them couldn't get any better, we mustered up the courage to speak to them. And you know what? We found out they read us! They really do read us!! We hope you enjoy our moment with them as much as we did:

Spencer: You're with New York magazine? No, no way. You're the "fugly girls"?
New York: Are we the Fug girls? No, we're not the Fug girls.
Spencer: You're not those fugly girls? Because I'm not too happy with the fugly girls. They're mean, and they're disrespectful. They've got these … fashion girls — the fashion girls, they're fashion!
New York: Right, we know who they are. But no, we're not the Fug girls.
Spencer makes a move to retreat, and just when we think we've lost him, he turns back around!
Spencer: So what's up?
New York: Glad you asked! You're fresh from the White House Correspondents' Dinner in D.C. What did you do while you were there?
Spencer: We checked out all the, uh, the … sights. I don't know, we literally had, like, five hours.
New York: So you actually went to the dinner, right? We heard you skipped the dinner or weren't let in?
Spencer: We had the governor of Florida at our table! You really heard we didn't go?

Alexander Wang and Diane Von Furstenberg Are Into Superheroes

Alexander Wang and Diane Von FurstenbergPhoto: left, Getty Images; right, Patrick McMullan

Vera Wang said the ladies she's dressing for the Costume Institute gala aren't getting into the ball's superhero theme, but the lucky ladies donning Alexander Wang and Diane Von Furstenberg will. This is Wang's first year attending the ball, and he wouldn't reveal who he's dressing, but he told us last night at the Parsons Benefit at the Grand Hyatt that he was pumped about the theme. "If it was like Paul Poiret or something like that," said Wang, citing last year's theme, "I would not have known what to do.… It’s something that’s so formal, and then they pick superheroes and people are like, 'What the hell am I supposed to do?'" Wang, who "rarely, rarely" dresses up himself, wouldn't reveal too many details about his lady's look. "It’s definitely not a dress, I can tell you that much. That’s all I’m going to give away," he said. "That’s why I got happy, because I was like, 'Yes! I don’t have to design a dress!'"

We asked Furstenberg if she thought dressing according to the theme at this party was important. "No, no, but I mean, since it is superheroes, then why not?" she said. She added she'd dress all the ladies at her table in outfits inspired by Wonder Woman. We can't wait. — Randi Eichenbaum

Waris Ahluwalia and Christy Turlington on Man Makeup

Waris and Christy.Photo: Getty Images

Waris Ahluwalia has been wearing makeup for about ten years, he told us last night at Chanel's Tribeca Film Festival Party at the Greenwich Hotel. "I'm only telling you this because it's New York Magazine, but I'm actually 68," he quipped (he's not, he's in his thirties). We asked if his friends would be into man makeup, like Jean Paul Gaultier's new male cosmetics line, Monsieur. "No, no. I stopped hanging out with the theater group a long time ago," he said. Oh, har! Ahluwalia also shuns the men-in-tight-pants trend. "I love trends," he said. "Doesn't mean I have to follow it." Other trends Ahluwalia dislikes include the overusage of words like "bespoke" and "luxury." "Everyone just calls things that. Bespoke olive oil?" he said. "I saw an ad in Wired for the new Acura. That ad was four lines, and they said 'luxury' fives times."

Christy Turlington, on the other hand, would rather see men wear makeup than get plastic surgery. "Men's plastic surgery seems to be a growing thing. I see it everywhere. It's freaky! I'd rather see a man — I got my own husband, mind you — in makeup," she said. So if she's down with man makeup, how about the proliferation of men in tight pants and women's jeans? "Oh, wow. Mine doesn't. My 2-year-old doesn't, and my husband doesn't. Not in my house," she replied. Thank God someone's keeping her 2-year-old out of the tight-pants section. The last thing we need are baby hipsters tripping us at Whole Foods.

Tim Gunn Wants Nina Garcia Back on ‘Project Runway’

Photo: Patrick McMullan

Getting face time with Tim Gunn at last night's Parson's Benefit at the Grand Hyatt was like trying to talk to the bride on her wedding day. He had to exchange pleasantries with everyone there. Good thing we sharpened our elbows for the evening! We managed to push in and — rather than dull pleasantries — ask what everyone really wants to know: What's up with Nina Garcia, and is she going to be on Project Runway again? "You know, all that I know is from what I read. I desperately hope that we see Nina, because, as far as I’m concerned, she’s critical and integral to the show," Gunn said. "I mean, the chemistry that Nina and Heidi and Michael have is extraordinary, and why would we want to mess with that? I’m just hoping on hopes that Nina comes back. I just can’t imagine not having her." Michael Kors's Runway fate is also unknown, since he hasn't yet signed on for the series once it starts airing on Lifetime. "[Garcia] comes from a departure and a point of view that neither Heidi nor Michael have, or want to have," Gunn added. "And that’s why they make such a great trio." Sigh. We agree. —Randi Eichenbaum

Donatella Versace Likes Dems; Lauren Conrad Won't Attend Wintour's Ball

Photo: Getty Images

Michelle Obama often gets props for her wardrobe choices, but Donatella Versace would like to see her in something different. "It is very easy, casual. I like it," she said of Michelle's style at the White House Correspondents' dinner on Saturday. She continued, "I'd like to put her in different dresses. Maybe some jersey draped dresses." Perhaps something more va-va-voom? "Well, Versace isn’t so va-va-voom anymore," she replied. And how about Hillary Clinton? "I like Mrs. Clinton very much," Versace said. "I think she should lose the pants and wear some dresses." So whom would she vote for? "I like both candidates. I like Mrs. Clinton very much and I like Obama, but I know Mrs. Clinton, which is why I wanted to meet Mr. Obama. But he is not here." That might explain why Versace decided to attend, aside from the invitation from Time Style & Design editor Kate Betts. Versace added she met President Clinton at the dinner a while back but didn't think meeting George Bush would be as exciting. "I was looking forward to meeting Mr. Obama," she lamented again. With politics out of the way, we pressed Her Fabulousness for details on the Costume Institute gala. She wouldn't reveal whom she's dressing but noted, "I like superheroes, but I’m not following the superhero theme."

Kelly Killoren Bensimon Has No ‘She’ Time

We didn't know stress could give you such a nice
tan.Photo: WireImage

Poor Kelly Killoren Bensimon. You'd think that, while she's no longer editing Elle Accessories or married to photog Gilles Bensimon, she would have some time to herself. You know, just a little she time. But no: Kelly told us last night at a Cointreau-sponsored Dita Von Teese burlesque performance at the Orensanz Center that she has no time for herself. "Me, time?" she gaped, giving us a "What kind of dimwit are you?" look. "What's that? If you walked in my shoes one day, you'd be like, 'I can't take it.' It's, like, insane." We politely asked Kelly to rough out her daily schedule for us to actually prove that she is New York City's most bedraggled and beaten-down mom of two. And, we must admit, just listening to Kelly's itinerary wearied us and made us want to be one of those carefree South Bronx mamas toting four kids and a Salvation Army stroller on the 6 train.

Brace yourself for this: "Wake up, eat oranges every morning. If I'm going to ride my horse in Riverdale, I have to stir it with granola. Then I come back, and I'm e-mailing and texting like crazy. Then I take a shower, and I have a business lunch. Then I'm interviewing somebody or I'm writing an article for somebody. Then I pick up my kids from school and take them to after-school activities, and then I bring them home and we have dinner, and then I go out."

But Kelly still has time for the little people. Er, ponies. »

Met-Gala Dish From Vera Wang, Maria Sharapova, and Richie Rich

Clockwise from top left: Vera Wang, Maria Sharapova, Richie Rich, and Anna WintourPhoto: Getty Images

We're slowly uncovering the all-important mystery of who will wear what to the Met Costume Institute gala. Admit it — the suspense is killing you. Now, many designers treat such matters like official CIA business, hardly deigning to reveal a scrap of info about what they're designing or whom they're dressing. Vera Wang is not one of those designers. At Maria Sharapova's birthday party at Tenjune last night, we casually asked her what she was up to these days, and she spilled all types of beans. "I’m busy getting women ready for the Met gala more than anything else," she said. Ooh. Who? Who? "A few ladies. Melania Trump and Karolina Kurkova, so there’s a wide range," she said. They both sound like the Über-sexy types to us, but okay! Sadly, none of her gals are asking for superhero styles in honor of the new exhibit. "Nobody has come to me with that yet, although I offered. I really did offer some techno — almost figure-skating-type wear. I don’t know if there’s gonna be a lot of superheroes at this. I can’t predict quite yet."

Rogan Feels Guilty About Not Being in the Peace Corps

The green guys.

Last night at Barneys, the Sundance Channel threw an Earth Day celebration involving Loomstate designers Rogan Gregory and Scott Hahn — they were asking people to bring in old T-shirts, which would be refashioned and sold for charity at Barneys during the 2008 holiday season. Gregory revealed that he's been wearing green threads for as long as he can remember: “I didn’t know at the time, but all my clothes when I was younger were all hand-me-downs from my cousin. And hand-me-down clothes are pretty much like the greenest you can get." Now that the ecofriendly clothing trend has hit a fever pitch, we had to wonder if there were any looks the design-obsessed pair don't particularly love, like, say, certain totes that are very much not plastic bags? “I couldn’t think of any until you mentioned that. We’re just hoping they aren’t jumping on a gimmick,” Gregory said. “I heard they weren’t even organic cotton," quipped Hahn. Scandal!

On the matter of Rogan's upcoming collaboration with Target, Gregory revealed that the idea came from his sibling. "My sister, who works in the Peace Corps, would say, 'I love what you do and I think it's important, but what about the people who can’t afford it?'" With his sibling off saving the world, does fashion feel, in comparison, a little frivolous? “Totally. My parents will get off the phone with me in some fancy hotel in Tokyo, and they’ll try to get ahold of my sister, in, like, wherever she is.… Bolivia, like the poorest fucking country in the world. Whereas I have, like, this pretty life in New York.” Aw. But at least you're helping us! —Kendall Herbst
