It's Almost Mother's Day, and We Know You Need Help

From left to right, Banchet bouquet, Kaas plates, Voluspa candles, and Hayden Harnett glasses case.

Wouldn't it be nice if for Mother's Day (it's Sunday — write it down now) you could just send mom an empty bottle with a card that says, "Dearest Mother, All my love and warm, fuzzy feelings for you are inside this bottle"? As cute as that would be (we're considering it), it would look cheap and lame. Unless you give her something else to go with it, of course. Today we launched our Mother's Day Shop-A-Matic to help you last-minute shoppers. It features everything from home décor for Decorating Mom, glitzy electronics for Techy Mom, and beauty products for Glamour Mom. So start browsing already. Here are a few of our favorite selections:

For the traditional mom: Mother’s Day Bouquet by Banchet Flowers
Price: $235
Why we like it: Packed with cherry blossoms, white roses, peonies, and phalaenopsis — cheesy alert — this bright bouquet is sweet and beautiful, just like her.

For the decorating mom: Rob Roy Pansies and Thistle Plates by Kaas Glassworks
Price: $74 for Rob Roy pansies; $96 for Thistle
Why we like it: These floral trays work throughout the home — in the bathroom for soaps, at the entryway for keys, or in the kitchen for candies.

For the stressed-out mom: Voluspa Opulence Collection in Pagoda
Price: $96 total — $28 for fragrant diffuser, $36 for optic color bowl candle, and $12 for mini ceramic candle. Sold separately.
Why we like it: The Pagoda fragrance mixes cedar, honeysuckle, and passion fruit to create a relaxing scent within the diffuser and candles.

For the mom on the go: Capri Glasses Case by Hayden Harnett
Price: $28
Why we like it: This affordable, bright case is perfect for storing reading glasses or killer shades. Plus, this is definitely a better alternative than the junky free cases from the eyeglasses store. —Sharon Clott

The Best Veils, Stationery, and Gifts for This Season's Weddings

It's almost May, which means wedding season is here! But that stack of invites on your desk waiting to go out means you already knew that — and that your head is about to explode from too many unmade decisions. Were the chocolate-chip or chocolate-raspberry petits fours better? Are the napkins with the lace too formal? Should the bridesmaids wear tea-length or full-length dresses? It's a lot to manage, which is why we went ahead and did some of the hard work for you in our new Weddings Shop-A-Matic. We selected 106 hair accessories, 100 stationery samples, and 212 registry and gift ideas across all price ranges. So even if you're not getting married, you have no excuse not to give your wedded pals fabulous presents. After all, weddings only happen once. Unless you get divorced. Kidding! Here's a sample of our favorite wedding things.

HAIR ACCESSORIES

Something Blue Comb by Bon Bon Oiseau
Price: $500
Why we like it: For the offbeat bride, this features blue feathers at once delicate and daring. And, obviously, you need something blue.

Wraparound Birdcage Veil Made Exclusively for Lotus Bridal
Price: $180
Why we like it: This exudes simplicity and elegance. Perfect to pair with an Oscar de la Renta or Vera Wang gown. The pearls and rhinestones add just a little touch of detail without overdoing it.

Umbrellas and Wellies That Are Actually Cute

Clockwise from bottom left, Chanel boot, Tray 6 umbrella, Davek umbrella, Kenneth Cole Boot.

It's nice out today (what — does the Pope exhale sunshine?), but Al Roker predicts showers for Monday and beyond. Bleh. But we don't want you sloshing around in ugly Wellies. There are far, far too many these days, and seeing them on the streets is the opposite of our favorite. So we combed all of this fair city for the best waterproof accessories — including the stylish Wellies and fabulous umbrellas they don't sell at subway entrances — for our latest Shop-A-Matic. All budgets, from Target to Gucci, are accounted for — but enjoy some of our favorite picks below. Really, don’t you think it’s time for a new umbrella … ella … ella … Goddamn, Rihanna. We're starting to resent the girl.

Grass Umbrella by Tray 6
Price: $65
Why we like it: It has grass on it. Think of all the jokes you can make about "watering" it.

Whimsical Spring Finds: A Volcano Dress, Funky Booties, and Pirate Pants

Photo: Net-A-Porter.com, Eluxury.com

Net-A-Porter sent us an e-mail to alert us that new Alexander McQueen items were now up for purchase. But we just filed our taxes and, alas, we're not exactly expecting a $6,000 refund. Nevertheless, we were inspired to take an afternoon online-shopping break, wherein we came upon some particularly funky finds. They're not H&M prices, but true originality doesn't come for free! Plus, they're high on humor — why not blow a month's rent (and then some) on something weird that'll at least make you laugh?

Clockwise from bottom left,
Nathan Jenden Lava cotton dress, $1,888
Haven’t you always wanted your elbows to be more volcanic?

Y-3 Phasma 90 Stretch Wedge, $750
The high-fashion backward heel meets a mesh sneaker.

Miu Miu Python Cut Out Boots, $4,300
Haven't you always wanted a fence around your calves?

Marni Ruffle Heart Bag, $945
Net-A-Porter editors call this purse an “unexpected delight.” We agree!

Stella McCartney Self-Tie Detail Shorts, $595
Pirate jokes never seem to go out of style, so we suppose these shorts are timeless.

Target's Next Diffusion Line: Jewelry by Dean Harris

Earrings and a tiara by Dean HarrisPhoto: Courtesy of Deanharris.net

When we got the press release naming Dean Harris as the next jeweler on tap for a limited-edition Target collection, we were like "whodat?" too. (Yes, even the experts are miffed by these names sometimes.) But then we took a look at the New York–based designer's portfolio, thanks to the magic of the Internet, and were impressed. We also learned Harris's jewelry has been used in the fashion shows of Marc Jacobs, Derek Lam, and Doo.Ri. His bio states:
He has been fusing wire into organic shapes since 1999 when he discovered his hidden talent through a philosophical quest of inquiring why people adorn themselves. The answer to this question was simple: People inherently need to relate to an undiscerning world in a positive way. This is accomplished through the self-expression of what we wear.

Whatever that means, it sure produced some good-looking jewelry. You'll find his Target range in stores August 17 through December 26.

Jelly Shoes, for When You Just Can't Wait for Spring

These will make rainy days so much more fun.Photo: Courtesy of melissaaustralia.com.au, Tara Rice

For every season, there is a rubber. We're talking footwear, mind you (you dirty birds!), but we're all a little sick of rocking our wellies, even if they're spotted, striped, plaid, or sport any other cute design. It's spring, people! That said, it's still a bit chilly out there for summer's fun jelly sandals. Luckily, a stylish friend of the Cut alerted us to a cute and comfy (she promises) happy medium: these platforms by Aussie label Melissa. Made of rubber, they come in a ton of colors, including black, and retail for $120 at Opening Ceremony. (They also come in velvet, but that's a little too seventh grade even for us.) The rubber keeps your toes in check while the solid platform lets navigate spring's tricky terrain. Not perfect for a torrential downpour, but a good weapon to have in your arsenal against April's sartorial challenges.

Go Buy New Shoes This Weekend

It's depressing and dreary outside right now but this weekend promises to be positively sun-kissed. So why not get a little spring shopping under your waist-belt? As we learned from our latest tastemaker, Zia Zeprin, earlier, outfits are all about shoes this spring. So start with those when building your warm-weather wardrobe. We picked out 158 damn fine-looking kicks in all price ranges for our latest Shop-A-Matic, so you can skip the browsing and go straight to the source. We'll start with women's picks:

Available at: Bergdorf Goodman, 754 Fifth Ave.; 212-753-7300

Mid: Stepping Stone Thong by Mystique (right)

What Puma and Adidas Have to Do With the Nazis

We love when fashion collides with seemingly non-related topics like history and politics. In today's chapter of hold-the-phone collisions we learn about the birth of sportswear companies Adidas and Puma, which began in WWII, and were founded by brothers Adolf (a.k.a. Adi) and Rudolf Dassler. See, they co-owned Dassler Brothers, an athletic shoe enterprise before they started feuding. Then Rudolf was forced to serve the German forces in Poland. Not only did this make him angry, but he believed his brother Adi had something to do with why he wound up there. So when the war ended, Rudolf told the Allies that Adi assisted the Nazi war effort. And they basically hated each other from them on.

Naturally, Rudolf broke off from Dassler and opened his own shoe store called Puma. Adi renamed his store Adidas. The whole town of Herzogenaurach got involved in the feud and sided with one shoe store or the other. Anyway, eventually the brothers realized if they wanted to sell more merchandise than the other, they'd need famous athletes to wear their stuff. This explains why the Olympics are the marketing circus they are these days. If you need a new read for the L-train, Dutch journalist Barbara Smit wrote a book about all this called Sneaker Wars: The Enemy Brothers Who Founded Adidas and Puma and the Family Feud .

Now go to a cocktail party and start a conversation. You're welcome.

Test-drive: Loeffler Randall for Target

The flats and our new favorite bagPhoto: Everett Bogue

Contrary to popular belief, we do not have closets of borrowed accessories waiting to be worn out for a night or two. No Loubs for that special dinner. And that MJ bag? Forget it. And though we've been begging for a wardrobe allowance, the powers that be just haven't coughed it up. So we do what any self-respecting (and broke) fashion eds do: We hit up Target's GO lines.

And sometimes, it's hit-or-miss. »

Men's-Only J.Crew to Open in Tribeca

Liquor Store no more: the site of the new men's J.Crew.Photo: Melissa Hom

Not content to rule just the gingham-dress and mix-and-match-bikini realm, J.Crew is invading Tribeca. Specifically, the old Liquor Store space. What, you were hoping a bar would open there? Ha, no. “We loved the space,” J.Crew's CEO Millard Drexler told DNR. “It has a lot of soul. We were looking and we found this very cool spot.” And? This won't be any old J.Crew. They're keeping the bar intact because it's a "fun thing," and the joint will be a special men's-only store.
We’re going to have fun communicating the kind of men’s clothes that we’re designing and selling.” It will carry a “highly edited” assortment of “the best-of-the-best” of the J. Crew men’s collection, including “all our special goods and more novelty items,” Drexler said. That will include the company’s Collector’s Items, its upscale, limited-edition pieces, as well as items on its “Always List,” must-haves that every man should own. For spring, the list includes broken-in T’s, cotton/cashmere cardigans, madras ties and lightweight chinos.

We won't say what this reminds us of exactly, since we haven't seen the store yet — but let's say it's not quite the first of its kind in the neighborhood. There just might be a little turf war come May or June when the new Crew opens its doors.

If you're having trouble imaging the bar-as-retail thing, we peeked inside yesterday. Concrete imagery after the jump.
