Basso & Brooke, Gareth Pugh Keep London's Freak Flag Flying

From left, Basso & Brooke, Giles Deacon, Gareth Pugh.Photo: Imaxtree

Lacking the big names of New York, Milan, and Paris, London Fashion Week is always about creativity. Once designers make a name there, they can move on to New York, as Preen and Jonathan Saunders have recently done. But aside from spotting future stars, the fun of the week really lies in the fact that "creativity" is often just another word for "freak show."

Which is why we felt let down early in the week. Where were the rat wraps? The see-through vinyl shower curtains doubling as dresses? The Mad Max–inspired makeup? Was it possible London had become … respectable? Paul Smith, who last season offered up lesbians in twenties tenniswear, this time sent out perfectly lovely cocktail dresses. Nicole Farhi's collection of outerwear — cropped jackets and cocooning coats — was … nice.

Critics Laud Calvin and Vera, Puzzle Over Posen and Sui

Anna Sui, Calvin Klein, Zac Posen

From left, Anna Sui, Calvin Klein, Zac PosenPhoto: imaxtree.com

At Calvin Klein, critics marveled at Francisco Costa’s geometric minimalism and also admired Vera Wang’s newfound sensuality. Anna Sui proved quirky but entertaining to most critics, while Zac Posen’s clothes raised brows and questions. See what well-chosen adjectives made it to press in our review roundup.

"The epitome of sensual refinement." »

Subdued, Modest Chic at Calvin Klein

Cocooning chic, courtesy of Costa.Photo: Getty Images

Francisco Costa, the designer at Calvin Klein, takes his mandate as New York's minimalist-in-chief quite seriously. His commitment to the line is admirable: Each of the looks in today's collection could've been cut with laser. The palette was navy, black, and gray; any bits of flash were subdued, in some cases beneath a layer of sheer cashmere. Necklines were high, skirt lengths modest. The danger with such prude silhouettes is that certain looks, such as a steel gray shift, can look dully corporate. But when done perfectly — on a barely cocooning coat, say — the effect is as chic as can be. In Costa's latest collection, both extremes were in evidence. —Amy Larocca

Critics Hail Marchesa and Marc by Marc Jacobs

Marc by Marc Jacobs, Marchesa, Rodarte

From left, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Marchesa, Rodarte.Photo: imaxtree.com

Perhaps giddy from the unseasonable weather, critics were warm to Michael Kors and Rodarte and practically red-hot with lust for Marchesa and Marc by Marc Jacobs. Consider these adjectives (used in reviews) in order of increasing positivity: “almost camp,” “high-polish,” and “exuberant.” Find out which designer drove critics to the thesaurus in our review roundup.

Vera Wang Gets Heavy

A winning evening dress sparkles in paillettes.Photo: Imaxtree

Vera Wang's ready-to-wear collection is, unlike her bridal and red-carpet pieces, intensely personal. Wang has spent her entire adult life obsessed with fashion, and these are the clothes she wants to make because she dreamed them. And that's it. The result has typically been the most poetic, romantic, and frequently the most beautiful of the American collections, a biannual phantasmagoria of unbelievably pretty fabrics and colors put quirkily together in a series of surprising layers and silhouette-pushing combinations.

Today's collection was not Wang's strongest: Her typically light hand was somehow heavy. Fabric appliqués were bulky, and a yellow brocade that ran through the collection was harsh. The collection was inspired by the Dutch painter Kess van Dongen, but his colors are far more appealing on canvas than on clothes, where they came off as dark and sometimes dour.

Taken apart, there are great pieces, particularly a short and short-sleeved broadtail jacket put cleverly atop a navy coat. The sheer, layered evening dresses were also worth noting, particularly one covered in this season's answer to after-dark, shiny silver paillettes.

Derek Lam Articulates Feminine Luxury

The new mainstay. Enjoy.Photo: Getty Images.

Fashion can be mercilessly fickle: Designers are quite often dismissed just as soon as they're discovered. So thank God for Derek Lam, who has slowly, methodically, and quietly worked his way toward a collection that is now a mainstay of what we consider American fashion.

Lam's show this evening officially announced his point of view, something he’s been working toward for several seasons now. And it is this: extremely feminine (flounced skirts, high ruffled necks), massively luxurious (the fabrics are epic in their richness), and heavy on detail, both in the tailoring and the embellishment. It's a very specific take on glamour and suggests a woman who is acutely conscious of the feel of her clothes. Standout pieces included an embellished black cocktail dress with a sheer yoke as well as epically luscious velvet evening gowns (one in navy, the other in black) with the most magical underlayer of stiff, accordion pleats in ivory silk. That petticoat moved so beautifully it suggested a whole new (and perfectly beguiling) focal point. The styling was sexy and yet Victorian, with rich velvet dresses, dark lips, and chokers. Who wouldn't want to look like this? —Amy Larocca

Michael Kors Designs for the Gossip Girls

It's Nate and Blair, except not.Photo: Getty Images

Much of the blondest hair in New York can be found in the front row at a Michael Kors fashion show. Kors, who is a master of the campy one-liner, is something of a court designer to those women who are so fortunate as to maintain a nutty brown complexion twelve months a year without ever visiting a tanning salon. He knows exactly how to show off those Palm Beach tans and blonde, blonde hair, making them shine and making them look their best. And he also knows how to market this typical, uptown, Board–of–Sloan Kettering look to the rest of the country. All of which is to say: Kors’s design vocabulary relies heavily on an existing glossary of chic. It is always, though today especially, rather a retro affair.

Critics Praise Proenza, Oscar But Wonder About Carolina Herrera, Halston

oscar de la renta, halston, and proenza schouler

From left, Oscar de la Renta, Halston, Proenza Schouler.Photo: imaxtree.com

Proenza Schouler's fall collection delighted critics, even as they considered the clothes too unattainable for all but the designers' "socialite pals." Carolina Herrera's equestrian theme led to accusations of "costumery," Cathy Horyn is a powerful advocate for the resurrected Halston line, and Oscar de la Renta may be contemplating inaugural gowns. Our review roundup has the rest.

Rodarte: Light and Dreamy and Unattainable

So pretty you almost can't even wear it.Photo: Imaxtree

In our mass-marketed and manufactured era, Laura and Kate Mulleavy, the designers of Rodarte, know the value of a little handworked originality. Their crafty collections bring a bit of the personal into an industry increasingly defined by the mass production of pricey key fobs, four-figure handbags, and heavy bottles of perfume. But the Mulleavys' sensibility is quite the opposite. The sisters live in an old family cottage in Pasadena, Grey Gardens style, and are famous for staying up all night to finish their collections by hand.

Rodarte's signature look is dreamy: net, tulle, hand-done appliqués. When heavy-handed, the effect is hokey. But this season, it was as if they'd taken a deep breath and thought hard about a sleeker, lighter silhouette. The effect was elating — airy knits, cobwebbed crochets. Evening dresses were a pastiche of tulle and net and unfinished yarn. They were light and, when full, resembled nothing so much as a Degas dancer. In several instances, the knits were paired with satin stovepipe trousers, which brought the fairyland effect right back to earth. A passage of three floor-length gowns closed the show, and it was hard to tell if their backs were full because of the lightest breath of tulle, or through some other genius bit of construction. Either way, they earned an extra round of applause. These clothes are luxurious, and they are unaffordable. But they will not ever become for the masses; they will never trickle down. For most of us, these clothes are for admiring from afar. —Amy Larocca

Critics Herald DVF, Send a Chill to DKNY

DVF, DKNY, Herve Leger

From left, Diane Von Furstenberg, DKNY, Hervé Léger.Photo: imaxtree.com

Big Names are showing daily, and the critics are quick to praise or pick apart. Diane Von Furstenberg's femme-fatale look was lauded, but Max Azria’s resurrection of the Hervé Léger label was mixed. Jonathan Saunders charmed most reviewers, but not Cathy Horyn. And Donna Karan’s time-traveling collection was confusing to all but WWD.
