‘V’ Mag's Julie Anne Quay Likes Designers Who Can't Pay for Their Own Fabric

Julie really loves her work.Photo: Melissa Hom

If there's a cool-girls club in fashion, V magazine is it. And the leader of the pack is Julie Anne Quay, the mag's executive editor. Quay's worked in fashion from all angles, from running Steven Meisel's studio to casting Marc Jacobs's runway show. But now she hangs with Hedi, handpicks the new girls, and makes people wish they were half as cool as she is. She gave us the scoop on what you should wear next season, who her favorite designers are, and what she's lusting after this very second.

Bergdorf Goodman's Linda Fargo Wishes You'd Cover Your Navel

Linda Fargo and the Bergdorf army.Photo: Melissa Hom

Linda Fargo, Senior Vice President, Women's Fashion Director and Store Presentation at Bergdorf Goodman, has perhaps one of the most envied jobs in all of fashiondom: She gets to play all day at Bergdorfs. Fargo oversees the store design, the displays, and, most importantly, the fashion. And she manages to do all this with style and the proverbial grace. Of course, her sense of style has a hard downtown edge that even the skinniest hipster would covet. And we won't lie—we get giddy every time she stops to talk to us at parties. So now it's time to share that giddiness with you.

Let's take a little tour of Bergdorfs. »

Seven New York's Joseph Quartana Doesn't Want You to Buy Dolce

Joseph and his girls.Photo: Melissa Hom

Joseph Quartana may have spent his time at NYU studying economics and business, but he preferred running with the Parsons crowd. So it was no surprise that, after making his mark on Wall Street, he happily left banking in 1999 and co-founded Seven New York, an ultraprogressive boutique that has since become a go-to for fashionistas looking for cutting-edge design (Imitation of Christ, Gareth Pugh, Bless, Preen, Jeremy Scott, ThreeAsFour — you get the idea). As the store’s buyer, Quartana hits Paris four times a year and is the mastermind behind the store’s forward-thinking inventory; naturally, the man has an eye for what’s next. How could we not sit him down and get some tips?

He really just wants boho to go away. »

Yigal Azrouël Would Like You to Define Your Waist

Yigal Azrouël, in his studio, with some looks from his lovely ladies' spring '08 line.Photo: Melissa Hom

At February Fashion Week, young Israeli-born designer Yigal Azrouël triumphed: He showed on a day with rain so nasty it was practically biblical, but his collection was so must-see that nary a buyer, editor, or fashionista could keep from trekking to West Chelsea for the event. And Azrouël's collection was more than worth it, with impeccable draping and textured fabrics that appealed to a more sophisticated customer. But always versatile, he's also collaborated with K-Swiss on new lines of men's and women's sportswear. Since clearly the man knows his stuff, we had to pick his brain for a bit.

As it turns out, he hates baby-doll dresses. »

Stylist Keegan Singh on Dressing Men, Shopping, and Facial Hair

Keegan Singh in his apartment with clothes, beautiful clothes.Photo: Melissa Hom

Keegan Singh, a 31-year-old stylist, is the man behind some of your favorite shoots in Vogue, V, Vman, Purple, and the New York Times to name a few. He also edits collections, hangs with the cool kids, and has the best head of hair we've seen in quite a long time. Plus he's a real charmer, as the Cut found out over bottles of wine one night.

But what's in his closet? »

Zia Ziprin of Girls Love Shoes on Vintage Kicks and Rationalizing $700 Heels

Zia with her bounty — her glorious, glorious bounty.Photo: Melissa Hom

When designers and costumers need a little inspiration, they know where to go: Girls Love Shoes. The Lower East Side treasure trove houses thousands of vintage shoes, some from as far back as the 1800s, serving as a historical archive of footwear, a resource for industry insiders, and a great online boutique for aficionados. Sisters Zia and Dana Ziprin learned the vintage ropes from their mother, a model and stylist who opened her own vintage store in California in the sixties. When Dana began sourcing shoes in California, it didn't take long before they amassed 2,000 pairs (imagine that shoe rack!) and opened the rental service. Now Zia, a former fashion designer, runs the new boutique as she prepares to launch her own shoe line this August. We pulled her aside to find out what pair of shoes she'd never part with and why a $700 pair of shoes is actually worth it.

Yes, she always wears heels »

Subversive's Justin Giunta on His Target Line, Skinny Jeans, and Paper Towels

Justin Giunta in his workshop — this is where the magic happens. It's like a crafty bat cave, no?Photo: Melissa Hom

All the world loves a fairy tale, even the cruel, heartless souls of fashion, and especially when said tale involves a cute young man, intricate jewelry, and a new Target line. Subversive's Justin Giunta, a former Pratt brat, got his start making chandeliers and tees before hitting the streets with his chains, rocks, and pins. Sick of selling on the sidewalks (for a short time, he even held some prime real estate outside of J.Crew on Prince Street), he took his baubles from store to store until he made a sale. Suffice it to say, Giunta hasn’t looked back. Now he's got his second CFDA nomination, a loyal following, and mass distribution — now seemed like the perfect time to pick his brain on his inspiration, the mechanics of a national launch, and what little things make his heart skip a beat.

The man loves his Dries. »
