Riff then did what any good campaign manager would do at the end of a successful operation — he threw a party. He invited all those who helped him in the endeavor to stop by the Bleecker Street shop between three and four yesterday to try the flavor, and he worked out an agreement with the D’Aloisio brothers that the sales would benefit the Greenwich Village Youth Council.
Grub Street stopped by early, just in time to see a tub of regular dulce de leche replacing an empty container of the brownie-enhanced variety. “We made it last week — one big batch,” explained D’Aloisio, who said there had been around two and a half gallons filled with about a pound and a half of brownie. “We ran out.” (Riff tells us that they brought out another batch around four.) Though D’Aloisio isn’t prepared to commit the flavor to his menu permanently, he hasn’t ruled it out, either. “We’re not ready to replace, because the customers we have, they’re used to the flavors,” he says. “We’re going to make two more batches. This week, definitely we’re going to have it — as long as it lasts. Let’s see how it goes.” In the meantime, no harm in celebrating small victories: “A friend of mine e-mailed asking if she could bring Champagne,” Riff says. “We broke out the plastic cups.” —Lori Fradkin
