BBQ Martyr Stays Up All Night

Epicurious covered last weekend’s New Jersey State Barbecue Championship in Wildwood but skipped the part about the winner. Instead, writer Siobhan Adcock paid tribute to Mike Somers, a veteran competitor “who sleeps in a tent in a parking lot next to his smoker all weekend and gets up in the middle of the night to start the beef brisket in time for the next day’s judging.” So how did Somers do? First prize went to Dizzy Pig, a dedicated crew of semi-pro cookers from Fairfax, Virginia. But Somers’s Team Old School did place sixth in the brisket category, so his night cooking wasn’t entirely in vain.
